Maurine (Sober) Traweek

Jan. 29, 1916 ~ April 18, 2002

Maurine Sober Traweek, 86, of Amarillo died Thursday, April 18, 2002.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Friendship Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie Tucker, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Rector Funeral Home, 2800 S. Osage St.

Mrs. Traweek was born Jan. 29, 1916, in western Oklahoma to Hugh and Bessie Sober. She moved to Oklahoma City at age 3, where she lived until her marriage to Julian C. Traweek Jr. in 1934. They were actively involved in church work until his death in 1990.

She attended Oklahoma University at Weatherford, Decatur Baptist College, West Texas State University in Canyon and received her degree from North Texas State University in Denton at age 41.

She worked as an elementary and music teacher for 20 years. She retired from Amarillo Independent School District in 1979. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who dedicated her life to God and her family.

Survivors include two daughters, Ureta Potter and Janet Wright, both of Amarillo; two sons, Jack Traweek of San Manuel, Ariz., and Warren Traweek of Tucson, Ariz.; a sister, Mildred West and husband, Clovis, of Taloga, Okla.; a brother-in-law, John Traweek and wife, Vena Merle, of Bangs; a sister-in-law, Patsy Traweek of Thrifty; 15 grandchildren, Marcia Armstrong, Dana Cook-Cable, Jana Brewster, Suzanne Snow, Jacki Quinto, Paul Shuman, Jerry Terry, Jacque Townsend, Mark Shuman, Donna DiMillio, Parrish Traweek, Julie Brown, Brian Traweek, Brad Traweek and Angela Potter; and 27 great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to Friendship Baptist Church, 2400 S. Arthur St., Amarillo, TX 79103.
