Stella Mae (Stockton) Thrower

October 15, 1928 ~ July 5, 2017

Stella Mae Stockton Thrower was born at home on October 15, 1928, to Verner T. and Annie Watson Stockton near Okemah, OK. She passed away on July 5, 2017, in San Antonio, TX. She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, David O. Thrower, presently of San Antonio. She is also survived by son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Jan Thrower of Waco, TX; daughter Nancy Thrower of San Antonio; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and John Payne of San Antonio; and daughter Brenda Stubbs, of Charlotte, NC, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by son Greg Thrower and daughter Mary Hedbany. She was one of 9 children. She is survived by one sibling, Betty McKinney, of Brenham, TX.

Stella attended school in Mason, then Nelagoney, OK before graduating from Haskell Institute in Lawrence, KS. She spent most of her adult life in Bartlesville, OK. She worked at Prudential Insurance prior to staying home with the children; she began working at Phillips 66 in 1976. She loved traveling through her position in the travel department at Phillips. After retirement, Stella and David made homes in New Orleans, LA; San Diego, CA; Laguna Woods, CA; and McKinney, TX, before settling in San Antonio. During all those years and moves, proximity to family was of great importance.

She was a member of St. John Catholic Church while living in Bartlesville and joined The Shrine of St. Padre Pio upon moving to San Antonio.

Stella was an expert cake decorator, seamstress, and quilter. Her quilted works of art will be treasured for generations to come.

To all who knew her, Stella's life was defined by her cheerful spirit, resiliency and practicality, but most of all by her deep faith and her everlasting love for David and her family.

A funeral mass will be said on Saturday, July 22, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. at the Shrine of St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, 3843 Bulverde Parkway, San Antonio, TX 78259.

The family is deeply appreciative of the expert and loving care that Harbor Hospice provided to Stella in her last weeks. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Harbor Foundation, P.O. Box 21463, Beaumont, TX 77720-1463 or at harborfoundation.com.
