Robert Allen Thompson, 81, of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, went home to be with the Lord on May 30, 2018.
Robert was born in Springer, Oklahoma to parents Charles Jewell and Beulah Thelma Cooksey Thompson on September 16, 1936. He graduated from Springer High School in 1954. He attended Oklahoma A&M, Oklahoma State University and Murray State Agriculture College. In 1961, he received his master's Degree in education from Southeastern State College. In 1984, he married Janice Ramsey of Muskogee, Oklahoma. The couple lived in the Muskogee area until moving to Bartlesville in 2010. Robert worked as a school teacher then as a Principal in several school districts. He also worked for the Department of Rehabilitation as a rehabilitation counselor and for DHS as a social worker.
Robert was in the US Army from 1954 to 1957. He was also in the Oklahoma National Guard for 41 years. He was a member and coach to the National Guard Rifle Team from 1957 to 1996. He received two prestigious awards for the Governor's Twenty for rifle and pistol as well as the President's One-hundred for rifle. Robert was also inducted in Oklahoma National Marksmanship Hall of Fame in February of 2000.
Robert was known for keeping bees and honey and for tending to the neighborhood pecan trees. He enjoyed coin collecting, bowling and playing bridge. His favorite hobby by far, was keeping his wife happy. He took enjoyment from making others happy and was a very generous man. Robert loved God and this was shown through his love for people. He was very active in his church at Bartlesville Southern Baptist.
Robert is survived by his wife Janice, of the home; children Rita and husband Bryan Archer of Sand Springs, Scott and Erin Thompson of Longview, Texas, Kay Schollenbarger and husband Ron of Dewey, Oklahoma and Whitney and husband Brad Brown of Owasso, Oklahoma; sister Nellie and husband Bobby Hull of Plano, Texas; grandchildren Alexis, Jeremy and Madison Archer, Serra and Mykuhl Thompson, Cameron and Connor Schollenbarger and Hadley Brown and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, step-sons Rick Gentry and Shawn Humphrey, brother Ronald Thompson, half-sister Juanita Richardson, half-brother Charles Griffin, half-brother Earl Griffin and half-sister Pauline Bray and several nephews.
A celebration of life will be held on June 22, 2018 at 10:00 am at Bartlesville Southern Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to be made to The Journey Home in Bartlesville or the Parkinson's Foundation of Oklahoma.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Stumpff Funeral Home & Crematory.
