Memorial service for retired U. S. Air Force Colonel Edwin E. "Tommie" Thompson, 66, who died Monday, November 2, 1992, will be at 10 AM Saturday at Antelope Valley Church of the Brethren, south of Billings. Graveside service with full military honors was conducted Thursday in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
Arrangements were by Wilke-Amy-Clay funeral home.
He was born May 2, 1926, at Lake Creek, Texas. He attended secondary schools in Delta County and graduated from East Texas State Teachers College.
In 1951, he received a direct Air Force commission, was called to active duty and assigned to pilot school. He earned his pilot wings in 1952 and was assigned to the Strategic Air Command where he served until retirement in 1976.
He was a pilot, aircraft commander and instructor pilot, primarily in bomber aircraft. In the later phase of his career he served with distinction in key staff and command positions, the last three assignments being civil engineer at Carswell Air Force Base, base commander at Barksdale Air Force Base and director of operations at Strategic Air Command headquarters, Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska.
His military decorations include the legion of merit, bronze star, meritorious service medal, air medal, commendation medal and Vietnamese cross for gallantry.
Surviving are his wife, retired USAF Lieutenant Colonel Della Houska Thompson; three daughters, Linda Anderson, Sudie Thompson and Camilla Thompson, all of Dallas, Texas; two sons, Edwin of New Braunfels and Jeffrey of La Grange; one brother, Eldon of Dallas; and six grandchildren.
