C. Vernon Taliaferro, 91, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, passed away on January 14, 2018.
Vernon (Red) Taliaferro, was born to John and Emma (Fletcher) Taliaferro on November 10, 1926, in Ardmore, Oklahoma. He graduated from Phillips (Texas) High School in 1944. At PHS he excelled at playing cornet with the Blackhawk Marching Band.
Cpl. Taliaferro served his country in the US Army from 1945 to 1946 and was stationed in Germany and the Philippines. He married the love of his life, Hope Carter, in 1946. After fourteen years of night school, while raising a family and working full time, he received a Bachelor degree from the University of Tulsa in 1968. Throughout almost 72 years of marriage, they raised and nurtured their children in loving homes in Phillips, TX, Bartlesville, OK, Shawnee, KS, and the Inverness Retirement Village in Tulsa, OK.
Vernon retired after 42 years with Phillips Petroleum Company, beginning as a truck driver, and ending as a procurement specialist and auditor. He was a Christian and served his Lord as a Methodist, serving as a MYF leader, sang in choirs, and served on countless church boards. He was a 50 year 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Unity Lodge #1242 in Borger TX.
He leaves as his legacy his three children: Lt. Col. (Ret) John Taliaferro (USAF) and his wife Gerry, of Summerville, SC; Claudia Rolfs and her husband Harland, of Bartlesville OK; and Dr. James Taliaferro and his wife Shannon, of Slaton, TX. He also leaves to cherish his memory his sister Mary Kate Page, of Grapevine, TX. He was very proud of his grandchildren. They are Jason Taliaferro, Shannon Dangerfield, Eric Rolfs, Kevin Rolfs, Matthew Taliaferro, and Juliana Taliaferro. His legacy also includes great grandchildren: Katie, Lucy, Jenny, Tommy, Ashley, Erin, Emily, Peyton, Parker, Mina, and Samantha.
His children and grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren remember him as: a true man of God; demonstrating his loving adoration for our mother and grandmother; always having a smile; fair; patient; being the first to praise for a job well done; supportive of all their educations and activities; facilitating cousins' road trips; providing nurturing golf lessons; hosting countless Thanksgiving celebrations; enjoying tart cherry pie.
Thanks for leading our family with love, and for the examples you set of a life well lived.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, John Taliaferro, and a sister, Billie Suhre.
After cremation under the care of Cremation Society of Oklahoma, graveside service will be scheduled at a later date at Pampa, TX.
The family requests that donations be made to your local VFW, Wounded Warriors, Operation Homefront, or Inverness Village. The family would also like to thank the staff of Inverness Village for their ever watchful care.
