Tommy Sunday Jr., 51, of Dewey, died Sunday, March 16, 2025, in Tulsa. Tommy was proud of his Native American Heritage and served as a Spiritual Advisor with the International Council.
Tommy was born the son of Tommy Sunday Sr. and Evelyn Kay (Scott) Anderson on March 14, 1974, in Claremore, Oklahoma. When asked about his growing up years his siblings stated that Tommy was the youngest and was always acting silly and also thought he should have the last word on everything. His work ethic was never questioned. When Tommy set out to do a job he did every bit of it. He has numerous recommendations from former employers stating his strong work ethic. In his free time, he volunteered most notably by mowing and weed eating the Delaware Tribal Center in Bartlesville and the Delaware Cemetery north of Dewey.
Most people know that Tommy spent many of his adult years incarcerated. He used this time to help others, especially those Native Americans who were also incarcerated. This is when he became a spiritual advisor and served with the International Conference, mentoring fellow Native Americans and helping them with rehabilitation and going on to live successful lives once returning to their families. One of the jobs he had while incarcerated was in the Dialysis Unit. Tommy cleaned the machines thoroughly after each patient and visited with the patients while they received treatment. He was given, a special commendation letter for his faithful service.
Tommy loved family gatherings and no matter the season, he loved to grill outdoors. His brother John recalls Tommy would show up early to help prepare and also be the last one to leave once everything was cleaned up. Tommy loved his grandchildren dearly, Konnor and Karlie. He has a soft spot in his heart for all animals and his favorites were Kiki, Simba and Water Bird. More importantly, Tommy was loved by everyone around him and will be dearly missed.
Tommy is survived by his daughter, Shakota (Bennie) Roberts; mother, Evelyn Anderson; grandchildren, Konnor and Karlie; siblings, John (Karen) Tucker, Sandra Sunday and Sheena Burnett; and a host of other family and friends. He is preceded in death by his father; and sister, Helen Burnett.
Tommy’s giving spirit lives on through the donation of his organs, which blessed more than four people. All of the donation surgeries were successful.
A traditional Native American wake will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, March 24, 2025, at the Delaware Tribal Center, 5100 Tuxedo Blvd., Bartlesville, OK 74006.
Services will be held on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at 10 a.m., at the
