Michael Wayne Sumner went to be with God on June 11, 2018 at the age of 63 after a long illness. Mike was surrounded by his loving family in his home until the end of his journey.
Mike was born on August 21, 1954 to parents Jake Newton and Ethel Elizabeth Sumner in Bartlesville, OK. Mike grew up the youngest of 11 brothers and sisters, and he graduated from Dewey High School in 1972. Mike worked at various construction jobs before he started his own carpentry & construction business. He loved helping his customers and would often take time to visit with his elderly customers.
Mike married Anita McCauley on December 31, 1996. They spent their 22 years together being each other's soul mates and cherishing each other and their families. Mike will be forever remembered for his love of family, friends, and God, as well as his generosity, kindness, humor, and passion for OU football.
Mike is survived by his wife Anita; son Shawn and his wife Shelley; daughter Michelle (Shelly); granddaughter Devin Sanders and her husband Paul; grandsons Chase, Colton, Chance, and Jake Eaves; great-granddaughter Kiara Sanders; great-grandson Waylon Sanders; sister Evelyn Revard; brothers Jake (Sonny) and his wife Brenda, Jerry, Jim (Chico), Jesse and his wife Connie; brother-in-law Russell McCauley; sister-in-law Teresa Lomax and her husband Ray; and numerous extended family members. Mike was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Dorothy Baker, Shirley Swan, and Mildren Tayrien; and brothers Bill and Richard.
The family expresses their deepest appreciation and thanks to extended family and friends, the Cornerstone Hospice team, the Cancer Center team, and Dr. Robertson and his nurse Kim.
As Mike requested, a visitation with family and friends will be held at Stumpff Chapel on Thursday, June 14, 2018 from 4 pm to 7 pm. A private family serivce will be held at a later date.
