Funeral service for LaVerne Sumner, 99, of Chickasha, Oklahoma will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, September 12, 2008 at the Holy Name Catholic Church.
LaVerne Sumner was born February 27, 1909, in Alpine, Texas, the son of Oliver Templeton and Maebelle [Goodwin] Sumner, and died September 7, 2008 in Chickasha.
He and Thelma Mae Tirey were married December 26, 1928, in Kinta, Oklahoma. She preceded him in death November 20, 2003
.Mr. Sumner received his Pharmacy Degree at O.U. in 1932. He bought the Rush Springs Drug Store in 1939. He sold the store and retired in 1976.
Mr. Sumner was also a farmer and rancher all of his life.
He served in the U.S. Army for 20 years, retiring in 1952 as Army Major. He was awarded the Purple Heart and other awards for landing in France on D Day.
Mr. Sumner was a member of the Rush Springs Lionís Club, DAV and the Holy Name Catholic Church.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, Lucius Sumner.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law: Jane and Clarence Lefty Maher of Chickasha; five grandchildren: Thomas Maher, Mary Zachary-Cagniard, Michael Sumner Maher, Jill Lyles and Steven Maher; and nine great grandchildren.
Interment will be in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Texas under the direction of Sevier Funeral Home.
