Julius Strickland passed away 2 August 2012. Julius was born 8 July 1917 to Grover C. and Maude Bookout Strickland in Mt. Pleasant Texas. They moved to Louisiana where he attended school. He joined the Army in 1941. He was engaged in battles in the North African and Italian Campaigns at Kasserine Pass, Tunisia, Casino, Anzio, Rome Amo, North Alpines, Poe Valley and served in World War II until the end of the war. He received the following medals: European African Middle Eastern Campaign with six battle stars and one invasion, Victory Medal World War II, Army of Occupation, Army Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. He retired from the Army 30 September 1961.
After retiring from the Army he worked for the Gilfillan Corporation in Nebraska for a year. He then took a job at Fort Sill, OK in the Missile Department and moved to Lawton where he worked until he retired in 1979.
He was a member of the First Christian Church, Norman, Mt . Scott Masonic Lodge 540, Lawton, and a 32nd degree member of the Oklahoma Consistory in Guthrie. In his younger days he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also made jewelry and was a craftsman at woodwork.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, two nephews, one niece and a grandson.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy, sons David, Dennis and his wife Nancy, granddaughters Jennifer Crabb and husband Jed, Natalie Strickland, Candace Jennings and husband Jesse, grandson Brent Strickland, three great granddaughters and one great grandson, sisters-in-law Ruby Marsh, Myrtle Bowers, Sarabeth Dees and husband Jim, brothers-in-law Ed Freeman, Lloyd Freeman and wife Helen, and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church Memorial Fund or a charity of your choice.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at the First Christian Church, 220 W. Webster, Norman.
Arrangements for Julius and his family have been placed in the care of the Vice family at the Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman.
