Louann Kidd Stinson "Mema" passed away on Saturday, December 28th after a long battle with brain cancer. She was born on June 21, 1930, the daughter of proud Hoosier parents, Robert Louis and Jane Carpenter Kidd. She spent most of her life in Bartlesville, Oklahoma where she went to McKinley Grade School and was the first Pep Club President at College High School. Throughout her life, Louann belonged to many social organizations beginning with a high school club called the TAKs and as an adult, The Sewing Club and the BABS. She pledged Kappa at Colorado University and received a Master's Degree in Education at Oklahoma University. She taught sixth grade for 20+ years at Wayside and Central before retiring to Grand Lake in the winters and Alaska in the summers. After her mother passed away at an early age, she championed the cause of breast cancer awareness her entire life.
Mema loved hole-in-ones (she had three in the last 2 decades), salmon derbies, sailing regattas (skippered to first place in the Rum Doodle Race in 1994), fishing in inclement weather, and hosting 'bridge' slumber parties with her Oklahoma girlfirends. Her two favorite movies were "Picnic" and "Bagdad Caf�", her favorite songs were "Walk Between the Raindrops", by Donald Fagan, or "I Like The Way You Move" by Outkast. She sang tenor in Barber Shop Quartets with her father, her sister Susan Diacon, and brother, John Kidd. She could drive #8 at Hillcrest Country Club with a 3-wood often using the pin as a backstop.
Her abundance of life-long, close friends in Oklahoma and Alaska fulfilled her life with love and affection. Always the organizer of functions, but never the centerpiece. She engaged in passionate discussions about current issues especially when the outcome made life better for her family.
Most of her time was spent teaching Bridge to, and correcting the English of, her 4 children; Jane, Bob, John and Ted, 12 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She spent hours helping her grandkids with homework. She was a devoted sister and was known as "Aunt Pookie from Acapulco" to her beloved nieces and nephews. Her love of life was infectious.
A memorial service will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Bartlesville, Oklahoma at 11AM on Saturday, January 4th 2014, and at Resurrection Bay, Alaska on June 21st 2014. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Family Crisis and Counseling Center, 615 SE Frank Phillips Blvd, Bartlesville, OK 74003
