Memorial services for Tony Steger, 49 of Checotah, were held at 1 PM Saturday, January 14, 2011, at Garrett Family Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor David Bright officiating. Tony’s wish was to be cremated, and his ashes scattered at his favorite fishing hole. Services were under direction of Garrett Family Funeral Home of Checotah.
Anthony “Tony” Eugene Steger was born on Sunday, June 24, 1962 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to John and Patsy (Cotter) Steger and passed away Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at his residence. Tony moved with his family in 1964 to Newcastle where he attended school, graduating from Newcastle High School in 1980. Growing up, he loved to play sports and played football and baseball throughout his high school career. After graduation he began working for Dover Elevators as an installer and repairman.
He and Traci McAlister were married on Thursday, December 29, 1988 in Blanchard, OK. Tony later began working for the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority, maintaining the pike pass system. In 2010 he moved to Checotah where he served as the historical facility manager for the Oklahoma Historical Society at Honey Springs Battlefield. Tony enjoyed nature and the great outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and watching wildlife.
Preceding him in death were his grandparents, aunts, and uncles.
Survivors are his sons, Logan Steger, of Oklahoma City, Jacob Steger of Blanchard; parents, John and Patsy Steger of Newcastle; brother, John Steger, Jr. and his wife Della of Newcastle; sisters, Suzie Gordon of Newalla, Sharon Hendrickson and husband Brad of Newcastle; mother of his sons, Traci Steger, of Porum; Drew Steger, Jordan Steger, Aaron Steger, Allie Hendrickson, Bradford Hendrickson, Molly Gordon, Asher McAlister & Ava McAlister who where his nieces and nephews that he loved dearly. Also surviving are aunts, uncles, cousins, grand-nieces and nephews, other extended family and a lifetime of friends.
