Ida Syrene Priscilla "Irene" (Spencer) Starkey

January 19, 1907 ~ December 16, 2003

Irene P. Starkey made her transition into her eternal resting place on December 16, 2003. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Monday, December 22, 2003, at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 3700 River Blvd. Viewing will be Saturday, December 20, 12:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Irene was born January 19, 1907, in Carter County, Woodford, Oklahoma, during Indian Territory times. She was named Ida Syrene Priscilla Spencer, but later known as Irene. She was given the nickname "Granny" by her son-in-law. That name became her permanent title by all who knew and loved her. She met Columbus Starkey when she was young and they later married. They traveled around the western states for several years. In 1936, while in Yuma, Arizona, their young son, Cecil Starkey, passed away. During the 1940s they lived briefly in Arvin, where their daughter Jo'wana was born. The year 1942 would bring Irene and Columbus back to Kern County where they established permanent residence in Bakersfield.

Irene enjoyed being a homemaker. She took pride in crocheting, embroidery, sewing and canning. She enjoyed cooking meals during holidays for her entire family. Her other interests included many camping, fishing and hunting trips with her husband, daughter and niece, Martha. She enjoyed having her grandchildren spend weekends with her. "Granny" had a fighting spirit that will go in the hearts of all of us who knew her.

Irene is survived by her daughter, Jo'wana Cartmell and son-in-law, Gary Cartmell; her granddaughter and husband, Teresa and Jerry Burdick; grandson, and fianc, Eric Cartmell and Sheila Kendall. She leaves behind her great grandchildren, Joseph, Zachary and Chevelle Timmins and Tison, Sommer, Dillan and Gunnar Cartmell. Irene is also survived by her brother, Garland Spencer; brother and sister-in-law, Lovell and Halda Spencer; sister and brother-in-law, Naomi and Hershal Baker; including her special niece and great niece, Martha Paaren-Fletcher and Kari Parren; along with many other nieces and nephews. Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Columbus; son, Cecil and brothers, Richard, George, Alfred and Johnny Spencer.
