Barbara (Sears) Stanaway

Barbara (Sears) Stanaway
1934 ~ September 9, 2021

Barbara Stanaway passed away peacefully in Nashville, TN on September 9, 2021. Barbara was born at the home of her grandparents north of Oglesby, OK in 1934. She attended Fish Creek and Ochelata schools and graduated as valedictorian from Ochelata High School in 1952. Barbara was very active in 4-H clubs and often won prizes for her projects and leadership. She served as Dairy Queen for Washington County when she was 17 years old. She graduated from Southern Adventist University in Collegedale, TN with a degree in Elementary Education, and from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga with her graduate degree in Education.

Barbara eventually taught all 8 elementary grades at several different schools including the Bartlesville Seventh-day Adventist Church Elementary School as her first teaching position in the 1960's. She retired from A.W. Spalding Elementary School in Collegedale, TN after more than 30 years of being a professional educator in elementary schools; and at Southern Adventist University where she modeled excellence in education and mentored many future teachers. Each of her three children had Barbara as their elementary school classroom teacher for at least one year.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents Walter and Audrey (Hawkins) Sears, her daughter Tia Stanaway, and a very loved brother-in-law Rollie Tresner. She is survived by her cherished sister Helen Sears Tresner and Helen's children, James, Audrey Ann, and Nathan; and her beloved children Amy (Myron) Johnson, Gay (David) Knapp, and Ian (Cindy) Stanaway. Her lifetime treasures included her grandchildren David (Leah) Knapp, Nathan (Ellen) Stanaway, Amy Knapp (Tim) McHenry, Elisabeth Stanaway (Nicholas) Zeller, Luke (Rachel) Stanaway, and all the beautiful great grandchildren.

Consistent with Barbara's generosity, her principles of service to God and humankind, and her promotion of education she arranged ahead of time for her body to be donated to medical science through the Vanderbilt University Medical Center Anatomic Donations Program. Her private Celebration of Life will be held outside, partly due to COVID, but mostly because of her love of nature. Donations to your favorite charity in her memory are appreciated. Her favored charities included Southern Adventist University (www.southern.edu), any local Seventh-day Adventist Church, and Doctors Without Borders.
