Cheryl Anne (Zerboni) “Cheri” Speer

Cheryl Anne (Zerboni) “Cheri” Speer
October 18, 1951 ~ November 18, 2011 (age 60)

Speer, Cheryl Anne “Cheri”, 60, fondly known by her family as “Little White Mouse” and “Nonna” to her grandchildren, passed away Friday, November 18, 2011 in Norman, Oklahoma.  She was born October 18, 1951 in Bethesda, Maryland to John and Jeanne (Gray) Zerboni.

After attending Nichols Hills Elementary and Harding, Cheri was a member of the John Marshall graduating class of 1969.  She received her Bachelors in Psychology in 1973 and Masters in Special Education in 1978 both from the University of Oklahoma.  She began her teaching career in 1974 as a special education teacher at Little Axe, OK, taught at Norman High School, 1976 - 1997 and was currently teaching at Norman North, (1997 – 2011), where she was the Department Chair of Special Education.  Cheri was fondly known by her students as “Momma Speer” and was very passionate about her role as a teacher, motivator, tutor and leader.  She motivated her students to achieve their goals and not to ever quit.  Cheri enjoyed team teaching Algebra II, helping coordinate graduation ceremonies and was a senior class sponsor as well. Cheri was instrumental in developing programs for each child that would help them succeed and enjoyed leading Pack Chat which is why she was recognized in the Who's Who of Teaching.

Cheri was a great mother and that is why she was such a great teacher.  She was very close to both of her sisters.  Cheri's greatest joy was her grandchildren, Carson and Corynn.  She enjoyed having them over for living room campouts, swimming, having dinner and spending quality time together.  She was an outstanding cook, an avid reader, loved to plant flowers in her garden and spend time in her pool.  Cheri was referred to as the “Queen of Bling,” the life of the party, and a friend to all.

Cheri is survived by her husband, Terry Speer of the home; her mother, Jeanne Zerboni; two sons, Clay Speer and wife Julie and Blair Speer and wife Kendall; two sisters, Carol Zerboni and Liz Wilson and her husband Paul and son Ben; and two grandchildren, Corynn Speer and Carson Speer all of Norman.  She was preceded in death by her father, John Zerboni.

In lieu of gifts or flowers, donations may be made to the Cheri Speer Scholarship Fund, care of Republic Bank of Norman. PO Box 5369, Norman, Ok. 73070

The family will greet friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Sunday, November 27, 2011 at Havenbrook Funeral Home, 3401 Havenbrook St. of Norman.

Memorial services will be held 2:00 p.m., Monday, November 28, 2011 at the McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church, 419 S. University Blvd. of Norman.
