Winston "Diggie" Carroll Smith of Durant, Oklahoma was born January 28, 1936 In Eunice, Louisiana and died October 1, 2015 at the Texoma Medical Center in Denison, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Adam and Winnie Smith of Eunice, Louisiana, three brothers and one sister.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Townsend Smith of the home; daughter, Shawn Smith Shirey and husband Wayland of Durant, Oklahoma; son, Kris Smith and wife Connie of New Iberia, Louisiana; six grandsons, Jamie, Adam, Barrett, Matthew Shirey formerly of Durant, Cody LaFleur and Chris Smith of Louisiana; four great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter.
Winston "Diggie" graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University in 1960 where he lettered in track for 2 years and sang in the Freshman Bison Glee Club.
He and Mary married March 28, 1959 at the First Baptist Church of Durant. They celebrated 56 years of marriage this year.
Winston was a high school teacher and girl's basketball coach in Louisiana.
He served for 2 years in the Marine Corps from 1956 - 1958 and was stationed in Twenty Nine Palms, California.
Winston served in the Gideons International for many several years, being a State Officer.
He has been a Baptist Pastor for 31 years in Louisiana, Texas, Iowa and Oklahoma. Winston had recently been a pastor at the Albany Baptist Church and was currently the pastor of the Brown Baptist Church.
A celebration of life service will be at 12:00 noon Saturday, October 17 at the Silo Baptist Church. A fellowship meal will follow.
Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the Gideon Memorial Bible Fund, cards will be available at the service.
