Memorial service for Val E. Smith Sr., 65-year-old Enid, Okla., resident, will be 10 a.m. today, Sept. 17, 2014, at Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Jay Custar officiating. A private family burial will be held at a later date.

Val was born on Valentine's Day, 1949, in McLean, Texas, to Jud and Georgia (Post) Smith and passed away at home, surrounded by his family on Sunday, Sept. 14, 2014, in Enid. He grew up in El Paso and in 1967, proudly joined the United States Army. In 1971, he was honorably discharged.

He made his home in Enid during the 1970s.

In 2012, he held the rank of Commander for the American Legion, Post 4.

Val had a passion for music. He played guitar and was the lead singer for the band, Branders. He loved being with his family and could often be found fishing, camping or golfing. On Oct. 9, 1989, Val married Merri Wright. He was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and uncle, who never met a stranger and could tell one heckuva story.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jud; sister, Denise Smith; and two nephews, Steve Schram and Donny Letourneau.

Val is survived by his wife, Merri; five children, Val Jr. and wife Viviana, Traci, Chad, Melissa and husband Joshua, and Gary and wife Kristen; seven grandchildren, Hannah, Jessica, Ariana, Alyssa, Alex, Dylan and Morgan; his mother, Georgia; four siblings, Joyce and husband Don, Dean and wife Jeannie, Karen and husband Charles, Renee and husband Landis; uncle, Gerald Petey and wife Judy; two sisters-in-law, Phyllis and Penni; and extended family too numerous to count.

Memorials can be given through the funeral home to 4-R-Kids.
