Phillip Ray “Phil” Smith

Phillip Ray “Phil” Smith
July 19, 1930 ~ August 29, 2013 (age 83)

Phillip Ray “Phil” Smith, age 83, passed away peacefully at his home after a brief illness on August 29, 2013.  He was blessed to have died like he lived - in quiet dignity and surrounded by those he loved and who loved him. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be greatly missed.

Phil was born July 19, 1930, in Las Vegas, New Mexico to George Dewey and Christine Hursh Smith.  Phil attended New Mexico State University and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.  Phil worked as a chemical engineer for Phillips Petroleum, retiring after 32 years of service.  He was proud to have been a part of the team that developed the Ekofisk oilfields in the North Sea, a feat previously thought impossible.

Phil and Carolyn raised their family in Bartlesville and later retired to Grand Lake.  Whether it was fishing, golfing or traveling, Phil’s path was always blessed with the richness of loving friends and family.  His church and church family, especially the Thomas Class, were so important to his life.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert Smith.  He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Carolyn Smith; son Barry L. Smith and wife Kristi; daughter Kristin Russell and husband Pat; and grandchildren Abbey, Hallie, Jordan, Gabby and Caroline.

A memorial service to celebrate Phil’s life will be 11 A.M. Tuesday, September 3, 2013, at First Christian Church, 220 S. Webster Avenue in Norman, Oklahoma.

In memory of Phil contributions may be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation or to a charity of your choice
