Dennis Earl Smith, 83, went peacefully to meet our Lord on July 31, 2024, after a brief battle with cancer. He was born on October 26, 1940, in Oklahoma City, Okla., the son of Chester Davidson Smith and Wilma Wanda Varner-Smith.
Dennis was a 1958 graduate of Capitol Hill High School and was baptized at Kentucky Avenue Baptist Church and was a believer his entire life.
After living in California 10 years, he and Shirley moved to Oklahoma in 1978 and set roots in Nicoma Park where they were involved in many aspects of the community including several years of coaching t-ball, softball, and basketball. Dennis was known as one of the best coaches and umpires around. He also enjoyed singing in the church choir as he had a beautiful voice and was not shy about letting others know about it. And anyone who knew Dennis knew he was never short on jokes or trivia since he was a "wealth of useless knowledge". He spent his last 25 years in Bethel Acres where he enjoyed country life, playing Sudoku, watching game and judge shows, and watching his family grow. Dennis was a printer for 53 years starting his profession in 1956 at age 16 and retiring in 2009. He was loved and respected by many, many people and will be missed. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Wanda Smith, and two nephews, Randy Smith and Ryder Catlege.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Shirley A. Gayler-Smith. Dennis had five daughters: Three children with Shirley; Krista Wallis and husband Joe of Moore, Okla., Kelli Godfrey of Shawnee, Okla., and Katherine Mayes and husband Brandon of Bethel Acres (Shawnee), Okla.; and two from a previous marriage (Alta); Karin Quinn of Frisco, Texas, and Cyndi Christopher of Colorado; two siblings: Terry B. Smith and wife Darlene of Oklahoma City, Linda Bates of Oklahoma City; 11 grandchildren - Tyler Smith (Karen), Kameron Webb (Devan), Sahara, Brady, Kalyn, Liam, Conor, Stephanie (James), Jessica (Hayden), Destiny (Kristyn), Braxton; seven great-grandchildren: Evelyn, Elijah, Khloe, Carson, Everly, Hallie and Thomas; several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and many, many friends.
A memorial service will be held at John Ireland Funeral Home, 120 S. Broadway, Moore, Okla., on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at 2 p.m.
