Annie Mae Smith died peacefully on February 5, 2017 in McAlester, OK at the age of 86. She was a 17 year cancer survivor. Annie was born May 29, 1930 to Willie Mae Helem and P.P. Childs. She graduated from LaOverture High School. After graduation, Annie worked as a Teacher's Aide to special needs children at LaOverture and later as a hostess at McAlester Country Club. Annie became a member of East Star Baptist Church in McAlester at an early age. She served on the usher board for many years. She also raised and encouraged her ten (10) children to honor and serve the Lord at all times.
Annie was always full of spirit and a joy to be around. She enjoyed playing cards, dominoes, poker or another thing to bring family and friends together for fun and laughter. Annie will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, friend and overall kind hearted person to all that crossed her path.
Annie was preceded in death by her mother Willie Helem, father P.P. Childs, daughter Sheila Brown, son Odell Smith, brothers Tom McIntosh, George Jones, Alfred Gatewood, Bobby Helem, sister Florence Stapleton, grandson William Smith, Jr. and several nieces and nephews.
Surviving are her children Sharon Johnson (MacArther) in Omaha NE, William Smith (Teresa) in Omaha, Marvin Smith in McAlester, Christa Simpson in McAlester, Bobby Smith (Sarah) in Knoxville TN, Alvino Smith in McAlester, E.J. Smith in Omaha NE., Marsha Smith in Omaha NE. ; her brother William Jones in Richmond CA, Sisters Mary Bass in Omaha, Nancy Austin in McAlester, Viola McGill in McAlester. Annie was blessed with 32 grandchildren, and 41 great grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren.
We would like to thanks McAlester Nursing Center for the 6 years they cared for my mom. She made a lot of friends and enjoyed her time there. We would also like to thank Heartland Hospice Care for the support they provided during her final hours.
Services for Ms. Annie will be 1pm, Saturday, February 11, 2017 at Chaney-Harkins Funeral Home in McAlester, OK. Following services we will honor her wishes for cremation. She was loved by all and will be truly missed.
