Glenda Smalley, a long-time resident of the Lamont area, passed away peacefully the 6th of February, 2018, at Greenbriar Village in Enid.
Glenda, or Sue, as many friends and family called her, was born to Glenn and Joan Smalley on February 26, 1947, in Stillwater.
After her birth, the family moved to the family farm east of Salt Fork. Glenda has one older brother, Jimmie.
Glenda grew up on the family farm and attended school in Lamont. She graduated from high school in 1965.
After school, she worked in Medford at the DairyMart with her cousin, Carol Vincent (Bobbitt) as well as making various sightseeing trips with Carol around the country.
Glenda then attended several colleges. While attending college, and through a mutual acquaintance, she met Nick Turner. They got married in 1968.
Glenda and Nick moved to B.C. Canada where Nick had accepted a teaching position in a small rural one-room school. With Glenda's miniature Schnauzer, Precious, they would all go duck hunting on a nearby slough. They also went moose hunting and Glenda canned a lot of meat.
One winter, the temperature dropped to minus 63F and the oil stove in the building quit as the oil turned to gel in the cold. They almost set the place on fire trying to thaw out the oil line with a propane torch. Glenda, in a night gown and rubber boots, shoveled snow onto the wooden oil tank stand that had caught on fire. A local garage owner made them a 5 gallon oil tank for inside the teacherage so the oil could run.
Unfortunately the marriage did not last and Glenda returned to Medford in 1970. After going back to school and graduating from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in 1973 with a degree in AgEcology, Glenda moved to South Dakota, where she worked as a Park Ranger.
It was only a seasonal job and she soon moved back to Medford to help her folks run the family business. She reconnected with Nick and they re-married in 1977. They lived in Alexis Creek where Nick was teaching. When Zack was born in 1979, they eventually settled in Big Lake, B.C. where Sarah was born in 1982, and started Littlebit Farm.
Nick continued teaching in Williams Lake and Glenda took care of the animals- cows, sheep, goats, ducks, geese, chickens, dogs and cats. However, Glenda and Nick divorced again in 1991, and Glenda and the kids relocated to Medford.
While living in Medford, she met Larry Irvin and after a whirlwind courtship, she married Larry on September 19, 1993. Glenda and Larry were active members in United Methodist Church and both were in the choir group.
They also enjoyed gardening and had all kinds of flowers, plants and vegetables growing around the house. However, not everything was roses and in 1998, Glenda and Larry divorced.
In 2000, Glenda moved back to Lamont, to raise animals on the family farm and to help her mom. Then, in 2004, Glenda purchased the General Store in Lamont. Along with her daughter, she enjoyed running the store, meeting and greeting each person that came into the store. Due to health reasons, she finally sold the store in 2015.
Glenda loved working with animals. During her younger years, she was active in 4-H showing livestock and when she was older, she helped her kids and others as a member. She also had several hobbies and enjoyed creating various arts and crafts.
Glenda also had several honors and accomplishments such as: multiple Jr. and Sr. 4-H awards; 1964 local delegate on Mission Tour; 1965 OSU work scholarship; 1966 State Delegate on European Tour.
Glenda was preceded by her parents, Glenn and Joan. She is survived by her family: brother Jimmie and Marilyn Smalley of Enid; son Zack Turner of Medford; daughter Sarah and Jimmy Reed of Pond Creek; four grandchildren, Darian, Gavin, Monica and Ryan, and a great-grandchild, Ella.
Glenda (Sue) will also be remembered fondly by several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral service is 2 p.m. Saturday, February 10, 2018, at the United Methodist Church in Lamont with Rev. Jeff McReynolds officiating.
Memorials may be made to ASPCA or Humane Society.
