Robert Sidney "Bob" Slater
1943 ~ September 2, 2020

ROBERT S “BOB” SLATER, son of Bob and Myrtle Slater, died September 2, 2020 at the age of 76, after a long hard-fought battle with kidney and bladder cancer.

Bob attended Hawthorne Elementary and Classen High School in Oklahoma City. He carried papers for the Oklahoman from the age of 9 and joined the Army in his senior year of high school.

Bob served in the Army for almost 27 years, retiring as a Sergeant Major. His first overseas assignment was Korea but he spent most of the year on temporary assignment in Vietnam. He later served a tours in Vietnam where he received several awards including a Bronze Star. He served in the infantry for several years before transferring to armor where he was a tank commander. He served three tours in Germany and stateside assignments including Fort Hood, TX, Fort Knox, KY and Fort Bliss, TX.

After retiring from the Army, Bob worked in various positions including 12 years with the sheriff’s department in Wichita.

Bob loved playing golf, watching Thunder basketball and watching OU football with his mother-in-law, Charline Caruthers. The greatest joy of his professional life was working at Kickingbird Golf Course in Edmond, where coworkers and customers became cherished friends.

Bob is survived by his wife, Glenna, step-daughters Tina Harrison Smith (Danny) of Sapulpa and Luci Graves (Jerry) of Mustang, 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, sisters Barbara Miller and Marilyn Campbell (Glen) of OKC, brother Drew “Kenny” Slater Hellmann (Mel) of Des Moines, WA and sister-in-law, Lynda McCasland of OKC.
