The memorial service for Dr. Robert D. Shuttee, 97-year-old Enid resident, will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 3, 2018, in the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Andrew Long will officiate. A private family burial will precede the service under the direction of Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home. Doctor Robert D. Shuttee joined his Heavenly Father on January 26, 2018 in the Commons. Arrangements are being handled by Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home.
Many current and former Enid area residents remember Dr. Shuttee as their "earliest medical experience." He was not actually in the Oklahoma Land Rush but was a true "pioneer," being the first physician to establish a full-time pediatric practice in Enid in 1949. Dr. William H. Simon joined the practice 10 years later when they formed Northwest Pediatrics. Dr. Shuttee truly believed that pediatricians had a responsibility toward the health of all children.
Bob Shuttee was born on January 5, 1921, in El Reno, Oklahoma. A 1939 graduate of El Reno High School, he then attended Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He received his undergraduate and medical school degrees from the University of Oklahoma. He served his pediatric internship at Indiana Medical Center and his pediatric residency at James Witcomb Riley Children's Hospital, both in Indianapolis, Indiana.
During his residency training, he met the "cutest" nurse and the love of his life, Betty Jean Fields. They were married on March 10, 1945. After serving as a medical officer in the United States Army stationed in Regensburg, Germany, and New York City during World War II, he and Betty were "persuaded" to move to Enid by his college roommate, Robert S. (Bob) Frantz, to become Enid's first pediatrician.
In 1953, during the Korean War, Dr. Shuttee again served as a medical officer in the United States Air Force at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City. Dr. Shuttee was active in many professional, church and community affairs.
He was a member of the American Medical Association, both the American Pediatric Academy and Oklahoma Pediatric Academy, a Fellow of Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatrics, and a member of the American Red Cross. While on the staffs of St. Mary's Hospital and Enid General Hospital, he served on the Board of Directors and as Chief of Staff, and served as President of the Garfield County Medical Society.
He was a member and former Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Salvation Army and in 1969 was named the Salvation Army Man of the Year. As a longtime member of the Enid Rotary Club, he served as President from 1987-1988. In addition, he served on the Board of Directors of the United Way, the United Presbyterian Children's Home, Youth and Family Services, the Community Development Support Association and was a member of the Enid Chamber of Commerce.
Dr. Shuttee was a longtime member, deacon and elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Enid. His second-greatest passion after Betty and their children, was playing golf with his longtime buddies, Bob Frantz, Jim Montgomery, Dr. Edward Abernathy and Dr. Jim Tagge. They were "notorious gamblers" on the course, wagering 25 cents per man, per eighteen holes!
Bob Shuttee leaves behind his beloved wife, Betty; their son, David and his wife, Karen, of Dallas, TX; their daughter, Jan Shuttee Brown and her husband, Tom, of Boston, MA; and their beloved grandchildren, Matthew Brown and his wife, Portia, of Boston, MA; Andrew Brown and his wife, Erika, of Chicago, IL; and Megan Brown Gray and her husband, Andrew, of Boston, MA.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas H. Shuttee and Frances McKee Shuttee, of El Reno, Oklahoma, and his two brothers, Thomas S. Shuttee and Donald F. Shuttee, of Panama City, Florida.
The family thanks all those who enhanced his life with continued support,
especially Doctors David J. Shepherd, Jr., Joseph Knapik and Craig Reitz and
the special care provided by Joel, Letty, Joshua and Jonathan Ancheta.
In
lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Enid Salvation Army, the
Community Development Support Association of Enid or the United Way of
Enid.
