On Monday, May 18, 2015, Edward Lyle Shreve relinquished his earthly body and was welcomed into the arms of his Heavenly Father.
A service to celebrate Ed's life, death, and resurrection will be held Friday, May 22, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Stillwater, OK. Officiating the service will be Reverend John Dickey and Reverend Johnny Caulfield.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday June 8 at the Family Farm, 3402 S Union Rd., Stillwater with the procession leaving Strode Funeral Home, Stillwater, at 12:30 pm. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Born in Oklahoma City on October 21, 1934, to Jessie Frances and Everett Lyle Shreve, Ed and his three siblings were raised in Oklahoma City. Lyle was a carpenter and taught Ed carpentry skills which Ed employed with his father to build many things, including a canoe and a house for his young family in 1961. Jessie was an industrious homemaker from whom Ed gained his love of gardening and the family recipe for peanut butter candy, a Christmas tradition which Ed faithfully fulfilled each year.
Ed graduated from Capital Hill High School in 1953, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he was trained as an Electronics Technician. His experience in the Navy established the foundation for Ed's later academic, professional and business accomplishments. Ed married Peggy Joyce Gray, and the couple lived in Oakland, CA, and Kodiak, AK, during Ed's tenure in the Navy. Ed and Peggy were married until 1998. The couple had two children during Ed�s military career, daughter Catherine and son Gary. Ed was honorably discharged in 1957, where after Ed enrolled at the University of Oklahoma, earning a B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1962. A third child, daughter Brenda, was born while Ed was an undergraduate at O.U. The family relocated to Las Cruces, NM in 1962, where Ed continued his education at New Mexico State University. While in the Master�s program, Ed worked at Bell Telephone Laboratoriesand White Sands Missile Range where he gained valuable experience with rocket systems and technologies. Ed completed the MS EE degree in 1964, and returned to Oklahoma where he enrolled in the Ph.D. program in Electrical Engineering at Oklahoma State. While pursuing his doctorate, Ed taught courses as a Graduate Assistant in a rapidly changing field of technology, having to create new course work almost every semester. Ed earned his Ph.D. in 1969, and his family was exceedingly proud of his achievement. Ed took a Senior Engineer position with Control Data Corporation in 1969 in Bloomington, MN. Realizing how much he loved Oklahoma, Ed accepted a faculty position in the Engineering Department at Oklahoma State. The return to Stillwater was the last move Ed made, and Stillwater has been his home since 1970. Ed was proud to be part of the OSU Engineering faculty, and held a Professorship until 1979. Ed worked as a consultant to private industry during this time, and spent a number of summers working in Hawaii and California. Ed took the opportunity to learn to surf, and began focusing on physical fitness. Ed became a runner and eventually ran marathons.
In 1973 Ed co-founded Frontier Engineering, Inc. A part-time endeavor, FEI provided engineering expertise and built small quantity electronics. In 1981, the company became a full-time entrepreneurial occupation for Ed. Beginning with five employees, the company rapidly expanded and within five years had over 500 employees in 13 locations across the country. Ed loved the dynamic business world, loved working with people to solve problems and exploit opportunities, and loved seeing his incredible visions coming to fruition. Ed learned real-time business and financial management, contract management, human resource theory and application, and business administration. Ed began FEI as an excellent engineer, and soon became an excellent businessman. The company underwent numerous transitions beginning in 1997, including the spin-off of three divisions and a renaming of a portion of the company to Frontier Electronic Systems. Ed continued to provide consultation and leadership advisement for these divisions, and Ed expanded his focus to include more emphasis on community involvement. From 2001-2004 Ed served as the Technology Development Specialist for Meridian Technology Center, assisting other entrepreneurs with business development. During this time Ed met Linda Reimerthrough his church, and a great love was born. Ed and Linda married in 2004 and wove together a strong and loving family. The strength was important because in 2005 Ed tragically lost two of his children, Gary and Catherine. In 2009, Ed came back to Frontier Electronic Systems to assist his daughter Brenda with a technology initiative she envisioned. His return to FES helped transform the organization and reignited a flame of entrepreneurial spirit that had grown faint through the rigors of business demands and necessary structure. Ed brought a heartbeat to the business that is impossible to imitate. He leaves many colleagues and friends at FES who will miss him dearly.
Ed made many significant contributions to Stillwater and the state of Oklahoma. A long-time champion of technology development in OK, Ed chaired the OCAST Applied Research Committee since 1996, was appointed to the OSTRaD Board of Directors in 2005, was an Industrial Advisor Committee Member to the OSU ECET, and was a Board member of the OK Science and Technology Research Park. Ed was also a Charter member of the New Mexico State University ECE Academy and Industrial Advisory Committee Member to New Mexico State University ECE. Ed was a dedicated member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, anda long-tenured Board member and champion of the YMCA. A strong Republican, Ed believed in creating economic opportunity through technology development and business enterprise, a philosophy demonstrated by the hundreds of jobs created through Ed�s business activities.
Ed's life was full each day. He was blessed to have Linda, and the marriage brought him tremendous joy. The two traveled to New Zealand each year, a tradition Ed started in the 1990's, and had many friends and a church family there as well as their beloved church family in Stillwater. Ed loved his family, and enjoyed sharing the lives of his daughter Brenda and her daughters Edyn and Evan, grandson Kregg and his boys Payton and Tyson, and granddaughter Karyn and her children Avery and Wyatt. With Ed's marriage to Linda he gained a large extended family, and shared many happy hours and events with Linda�s children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. For many of them Ed was their �Grandpa.� Ed�s sister Jobyna was a special part of his life. Ed loved to fly fish, garden, hunt, read, study scripture, and travel. He enjoyed philosophical discussions and music, knowing some of the most obscure songs known to man. He had an impeccable memory and a gift for mathematical modeling. He maintained his Professional Engineer license was always looking for interesting continuing education opportunities. Ed was a very complex and multifaceted person, highly capable with gifts he applied in many settings for the benefit of many individuals. To whom much is given much is required, and Ed was happy to give from his abundant abilities.
Ed is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Phyllis; infant sister, Nancy; daughter, Catherine; and son, Gary.
Ed leaves behind his wife, Linda; daughter, Brenda Rolls and husband Mark; grandchildren, Karyn Maurer and husband Dave, Kregg Danuser and wife Becky, Edyn and Evan Rolls; great-grandchildren Avery and Wyatt Maurer, Payton and Tyson Danuser; Step-children, Rollinda Saunders, Rona Stewart, George Reimer and wife Joannie, David Reimer, and their children Chris Megan and Macy Saunders, Davis Saunders, Kim, Terry and Walker Lane,Faith and John Saunders, Amanda, Jimmy, Jon and Evelyn DeMoss, Audrie, Nate and Connor Clark, David, Steven and Alison Stewart, Ryan Reimer, Hannah and Madison Reimer; Sister, Jobyna Fuller; brother, Kenneth Shreve and wife Margaret of Oklahoma. Many extended family members, friends, and colleagues will carry fond and meaningful memories of Ed. He impacted many lives and will be deeply missed.
