Donald Leon Shorter, 84, died Monday, April 23, 2018, at his son's home in Goddard. He was born May 18, 1933, in Ponca City, OK, to Ivan and Lucille (Ward) Shorter.
Leon graduated from Tonkawa High School in Tonkawa, OK, and Bartlesville Business College in Bartlesville, OK. He served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955. Leon worked as office manager for Gas Service Company in Hutchinson for 34 years until his retirement in 1990. He was a member of Countryside Baptist Church, Hutchinson. Leon loved to tell everyone about Jesus, he loved the outdoors and people, giving out mints and hugs to everyone he met.
On August 29, 1958, he married Patricia 'Patsy' June Raley in Ramona, OK. She survives. They shared nearly 60 years of marriage.
Leon is survived by: son, Larry Shorter and wife Jan of Goddard; daughter, Tammy Bass and husband Martin of Pratt; grandchildren, Erick Shorter, Joshua Shorter and wife Karyn, Katlyn Shorter, Heather Davidson and husband Brock, Ryan Bass, Kristen Morgan and husband Kyle; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Leroy.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 27, 2018, at Countryside Baptist Church, 819 W. 30th Ave., Hutchinson, with Pastors Ron Kyker and Steve Sherbenou officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Burial will take place at a later date. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, with the family to receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, at Elliott Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Countryside Baptist Church, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501
