Sam's Club lost a loyal customer on July 22, 2015. Orvel Ray Shook of Covington, Okla., was called to his Eternal home to be reunited with friends and family that he hasn't seen in a long time.
Celebration of Life service for a life well lived will be held for Orvel Ray Shook, 76, at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 26, 2015, at First United Methodist Church in Covington. Cremation arrangements are by Anderson Burris Funeral Home and Crematory.
Orvel was born July 5, 1939, in Alex, Okla., to Abe and Mary Shook and grew up on a farm south of Rush Springs, Okla.
He graduated from Cameron University and then earned his master's degree in education from Central State University. He taught history (a lifelong favorite subject) and coached every sport imaginable, and even accepted a position as a swim coach when he himself could barely swim. Sports were also a lifelong passion, whether he was playing, coaching or watching them (depending on his stage in life).
After retiring from coaching, he bought a grocery store in Covington, L and O Market, in order to feed his growing teenage son. They sold the store and he tried out retirement. After painting the house three times in one year, he decided to get a job at Ditch Witch to keep him busy until 2000, when cancer forced him to retire for good.
Orvel will be remembered for his humor, his love of family, news of any kind, picnics (well, food in general), coca-cola, otherwise known by him as "nectar of the gods," and quoting movies, songs and various age old sayings.
One of his favorite pastimes was working in his shop, but his wife learned early on to be careful what she asked for because if she asked for a toothpick, she would get a 2x4!
You could always count on him to be wearing his favorite clothes, which were elastic waisted windsuit pants, polo shirts with a pocket to hold his glasses and New Balance tennis shoes.
He loved to listen to his daughter sing, debate with his son, watch his grandkids play, but most of all he enjoyed just being with his wife, affectionately known by him as that "little old gray haired lady."
Micah 6:8 sums up the way Orvel lived his life and how he taught his children to live. "He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God."
He is survived by his wife, Lois; three children Bruce and wife Lynn of Choctaw, Brenda Bre of Midwest City, and Camilla Fisher of Perry; five grandchildren, Jake, Chrystopher, Mackenzie, Macy and Bailey; and siblings, Wally Shook and wife Lorene of Ninnekah, Kay Wauahdooah and husband Don of Anadarko, Debbie James and husband Randy of Alex, and Rick Shook of Norman.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Doris Shook.
Memorials may be made to OMRF, cancer and Lupus division.
