Eleanor Franklin Sholl, 99, originally of Dewey, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, June 20, 2017, at the Franciscan Villa in Broken Arrow. A memorial service is planned for 2 pm on Thursday, July 13, 2017, at the Bartlesville First Presbyterian Church chapel, located at 505 S. Dewey.
Eleanor was born December 6, 1917 in Hansford, Texas, the third child of five in a Methodist minister's family. As a minister's daughter, she lived in various locations throughout Oklahoma during her formative years. She graduated from Tahlequah High School as 1935 class valedictorian, and later graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a music degree in 1939.
Eleanor married Edward Henry Sholl on September 1, 1946. They originally made their home in Stillwater, Oklahoma, but eventually settled in Dewey in 1953, where they raised a family. Eleanor maintained a music studio in her home for over 50 years, where she taught piano, violin and music theory to several generations of Dewey and area music students. In 2004, she was officially recognized as a 50-year member of the Oklahoma Music Teachers Association. Additionally, she was an accomplished writer, regularly contributing editorial letters to the Bartlesville Examiner-Enterprise for many years. In 2003, she self-published a collection of her editorials in book form, entitled Grassroots Clippings from Oklahoma Green Country: A Democrat's Birds-Eye View of History Happening. Her daughter Linda proudly served as her online editor and liaison in this endeavor.
Eleanor was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bartlesville for 35+ years, during which time she served as church elder, and member of the Crossroads Sunday School Class and Cynthia Morgan Circle. In 2010, she moved to Tulsa in order to be closer to her children and families. She enjoyed a pleasant and secure existence in her cozy Tulsa apartment.
Her survivors include one son, Dr. David S. Sholl, and wife Daphne, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; one daughter, Linda Sholl Brown, and husband Bob, also of Tulsa; and one sister, Lois Campbell of Bellingham, Washington. Additionally, she is survived by four grandchildren: Dr. Angela Kennedy (Nick) of Dallas, Texas; Ashley Lemaster (Kevin) of Broken Arrow; Mike Whitaker of Tulsa; and Adam Sholl (Lara) of Breckenridge, Colorado; and nine great-grandchildren.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Beverly Sholl Whitaker; her parents, Sam and Hester Franklin; a brother, Sam Franklin; and two sisters, Mary Catherine Taylor and Madge Franklin.
