Peggy Jenell Shires, of Bokchito, passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on November 21, 2025, in Durant, Oklahoma. She was born on August 17, 1935, in Old Woodville, Oklahoma, to Dan and Julia Alice (Skiver) Barnard. She married the love of her life, David “Pinky” Glenn Shires, on March 13, 1954 in Bonham, Texas. Together they built a legacy of kindness and family unity that will live on. Peggy's life was one of steadfast devotion to her family, friends, and faith.
Professionally, Peggy worked in a sewing factory in Denison, Texas. She was a devout Christian, an active and loving presence at Blue Baptist, where her faith was unwavering. She found immense joy in witnessing God's creations, from spending tranquil times in nature to observing her beloved horses. However, her greatest pleasure was in watching her grandchildren grow.
She is survived by her sons, Donald Joe Shires and his wife Wendy of Colbert, and Steve Danny Shires and his wife Debra, of Blue, her daughters, Dorothy Diane Valentin of Sherman, Texas, Rebecca Lynn Dupree and her husband Ricky of Colbert, Dorothy Lynn Key and her husband Sam of Colbert, and Alice Kay Weger of Colbert. She also leaves behind her sister, Alice Roy of Pottsboro, Texas, and her beloved daughter-in-law, Becky Ann Shires. Her legacy lives on with her 20 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Those preceding her in death are her parents Dan and Julia Barnard, her beloved husband David Shires, her son, Glenn David Shires, and her in-laws, Glen and Dorothy Shires.
Her Family Hour will be from 7:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at Holmes-Coffey-Murray Funeral Home. Her funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at Blue Baptist Church with Brother Randy Lewis officiating. Peggy will be laid to rest in Georgetown Cemetery, near Pottsboro, Texas, following her funeral service.
Those serving as pallbearers are Parker Weger, Jason Weger, Drew Hawk, Leon Nelson, Wyatt Ables, Daniel Key, Michael McCrary, and Dustin Shires.
