BILLINGS — John W. Sheffer was born near Hunter, Okla., Sept. 10, 1921, to Lewis T. and Maude (Brower) Sheffer and went to his heavenly home Saturday, Nov. 20, 2010.
He attended Evergreen Country School, west of Hunter, until fourth grade at which time the family moved west of Billings and attended Garber School, graduating in 1939.
He worked for a short time for Williams Brothers in Vermont before entering the Army in World War II. He served with the 4th Infantry Division in the initial Normandy invasion, going in on Utah Beach. He received the "Quad a la gar" French medal for the liberation of France as well as five battle stars for Normandy invasion, Battle of St. Lo in France, crossing Siegfried line into Germany, Battle of Bulge in Belgium and Battle of Hurtgen Forrest.
After being discharged he returned to the Billings-Garber area, working for Champlin until going into farming full time. He spent the remaining years loving the land he farmed and serving the Lord.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, the former LaVelle (Terrel) Sheffer; a daughter, Janene and her husband Lynn Yost, and a son, Phillip and his wife Helen, both of Garber; two granddaughters and one grandson; and nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his first wife, Gladys Harmon Skaggs, a son, Travis, and infant daughter. Also two brothers, Alvin and Gene, and a sister, Thelma Lou White, and a very special Army buddy from Springwater, New York, Eugene "Pete" Englert.
He was an active member of Billings Christian Church, serving as chairman of the board many times, chairman of the building committee when the church was built and chairman of the elders the last 25 years. He was past master of the Masons and received his 60-year pin in 2009 and also past worthy patron of Eastern Star. He was a charter member of Billings Rural Fire Association and served as secretary/treasurer for 30 years. He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2010, at Billings Christian Church. Kent Reubell will officiate. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Enid. Services are under the direction of Dugger Funeral Home, Billings.
