Walter Franklin Shaw

Walter Franklin Shaw passed December 13, 2011, in Norman, OK. Walter was born to Buford Kenneth and Edna Myrle "Hart" Shaw in Henryetta, OK March 9, 1947. As the son of a career Marine, he resided in Henryetta, OK; Myrtle Beach, NC; Los Angeles, CA; Daly City, CA; San Diego, CA; Norfolk, VA; Norman, OK; and Fort Worth, TX, before his family settled in Norman, OK.

Walter graduated from Norman High School in 1965 and enrolled at the University of Oklahoma. In 1967 he enlisted in the US Army and, after completing basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, was sent to language training at Vint Hill Farms, Virginia. After receiving training in Czech, he was sent to Korea as part of the Army Security Agency (ASA). Prior to his honorable discharge he was also stationed at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. He returned to Norman in 1972 and re-enrolled at the University of Oklahoma, where he was active in Alpha Phi Omega and frequented OU Sooner football games, where he met his future wife, Karyl Austin.

Walter graduated with honors in social studies education in 1975. In addition, that year he married his college sweetheart. The next year, he began his long education career at Central Mid-High School, while pursuing graduate studies. He was awarded his Masters degree in education in 1981, and began his doctoral studies. In 1982, the arrival of his daughter interrupted those studies. In 1997, he was a member of the opening staff at Norman North High School, where he taught until his death.

During his 36 years of teaching, he was a sponsor for the Citizen Bee, for the Academic Teams, and for many choir trips. In addition, he was a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America, serving as an assistant troop leader. He was an avid reader, also occupying his time with crosswords and Sudoku puzzles.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Karyl Austin Shaw, his daughter Klynda Noelle Shaw and her husband, Kenneth Robert Hardyman, his brother BK Shaw and his wife Lou Shaw, and his father-in-law, Charles Austin, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, Buford Kenneth Shaw and Edna Myrle "Hart" Shaw, and his mother-in-law, Rebecca Elizabeth Austin.

Contributions may be made to the Norman Public School Foundation, 131 S. Flood Ave., Norman, OK 73069.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., Friday, December 16, 2011 at Havenbrook Funeral Home, 3401 Havenbrook St., Norman.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2:30pm, Saturday, December 17, 2011 at the Nancy O'Brian Performing Arts Center, 1809 Stubbeman, Norman.
