Aleece Lorraine (Steen) Shaw

Aleece Lorraine (Steen) Shaw
February 09, 1919 ~ May 08, 2009

Aleece Lorraine Shaw, 90, died Friday, May 8, surrounded by family at the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, WY. She was born February 9, 1919, in Dover, Oklahoma, to Lena Mae (Stitt) Steen and John Archer Steen. At the time of her birth, her father was stationed with the Army in France during WWI. Upon his return home, the family moved to Coyle, OK. Lorraine graduated as the valedictorian of her 1936 high school class and returned to Coyle annually for her class reunion until recent years. She and Delmer Del' Forrest Shaw were married in Guthrie, OK, on September 13, 1936. Lorraine worked at the Coyle post office until 1942 when the couple moved to Arkansas City, KS. There, Del worked for the Santa Fe Railway and Lorraine was a homemaker. In Ark City, she spent several years working as a bookkeeper for Huntsinger's Paint and Wallpaper, a skill she would use at home throughout her life.

In January of 1943, Del was drafted into the Army Air Force to serve in WWII. Lorraine accompanied him to Denver and Fresno during his training as a Bomb Site Specialist before he was shipped out to serve in the South Pacific in October of 1943. Lorraine worked at the Oklahoma City post office until Del's long-awaited return in January of 1946 following the end of the war. Daughter Delrayne, Lorraine and Del's pride and joy, was born January 10, 1948.

After Del's retirement from the Santa Fe in 1977, the couple moved back to Guthrie to be close to family and take care of Lorraine's aging parents. In Guthrie, the couple participated actively in their community, including 20 years of volunteer service for Mobile Meals. They also enjoyed their retirement years by spending time with family and friends, often taking trips to Wyoming to visit their grandkids. Del passed away in 2004, and in 2006, Lorraine moved to Casper to be closer to her daughter and family. After she moved to Wyoming, her new cell phone quickly became her favorite fashion accessory and ensured that she never missed a beat with her beloved family and friends back in Oklahoma! In Casper she lived at Park Place, an assisted living community, where she continued her lifelong habit of helping those around her.

Lorraine excelled at various forms of handiwork including sewing and cooking. A consummate perfectionist, the clothes she sewed for herself and others were made to the highest standards. Her signature menu items of fried chicken, fried okra and chocolate pie will not be forgotten! Lorraine was a natural caregiver and devoted much of her life to helping others. She never shied from extending a helping hand to friends, family, and those in need. Lorraine will be remembered by all who were blessed to know her for her kind, friendly, generous spirit.

Lorraine is survived by her daughter Delrayne Del Johnson and son-in-law Terry of Casper, WY; granddaughter Sarah Cheezum and husband David of Rock Springs, WY; grandson Patrick Johnson of Chicago, IL; granddaughter Ann Lonigro and husband Chris of Denver, CO; great-grandson Mason Cheezum of Rock Springs; great -granddaughter Ava Aleece Lonigro of Denver; three beloved nieces and several cousins on her side of the family; several nieces and nephews on Dels side of the family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Orda Mae McNeil, and husband Delmer.

Services will be held on Thursday May 14, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. at Smith Memorial Chapel, 220 N 1st Street, Guthrie. Visitation will be Wednesday, 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. and Thursday, 8:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie. In Lorraines honor, we suggest that ladies wear a broach to complement their attire as Lorraine was known to do.

Memorials can be sent to First Christian Church, 402 E. Noble Avenue, Guthrie, Oklahoma, 73044.
