Betty Ruth (Sherrill) Shafer, age 92, of Purcell, passed away surrounded by family on Thursday, April 6, 2023. Betty was the fourth of six children born to John and Sallie (Paul) Sherrill. Betty was born and raised in Mountain Grove, Missouri. She attended elementary school in Mountain Grove and secondary school in Exeter, California.
Betty married the love of her life and best friend Richard Shafer on June 24, 1947. Together the couple raised 3 amazing children; Steve, Connie and Rod. The couple shared 66 remarkable years. They did ministry and evangelism together for many of those years. Richard preached the Word and Betty handled the worship. She could play guitar and loved to sing. The couple traveled for years, through numerous different states, spreading the Word of God to youth groups. Betty had a true servant’s heart. She enjoyed cooking for her family, and loved to make their favorite dishes- Tamale Pie and Chili. She was also very competitive and enjoyed playing Chicken Foot and Wahoo with her grandchildren. Betty was always perfectly put together- hair, makeup and outfit. You would never catch her with any of her hair out of place or without makeup. Betty was the picture of beauty, both inside and out. She will be dearly missed!
She is preceded in death by her father, John Sherrill; her mother, Sallie (Paul) Lloyd; her sisters, Edith Morgan, Blanch Stacy, and Wanda Tankersly (Yarbrough); and her brother, Bob Sherrill.
Betty is survived by her sons, Steve Shafer and wife Jackie of Altures, California, and Rod Shafer and wife Pennye of Ardmore; and daughter Connie Trussell and husband John of Houston, Texas; 8 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and a host of family and friends.
