The funeral for Mary E. Settle, 79, of Alva, will be 10 a.m. Tues-day, March 3, 2009, at Alva Church of God. Bob Brown, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Rolla Cemetery, Rolla, Kan. Arrangements are by Wharton Funeral Chapel, Alva.
She was born June 27, 1929, in Rolla to Louise McEwen and Cole Edward Spears and died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009.
She graduated from Rolla High School in 1947.
She married James Winfield Settle, Aug. 14, 1948, in Rolla. They made their home in Rolla, where she was a bookkeeper for co-op station store. They lived in Oklahoma and Kansas. They moved to Howell, Mich., in 1962, to Auburn, Ill., in 1966 and to Alva in 1976.
She was assistant treasurer of Cherokee Strip Museum board, president of Woods County Family and Community Education, delivered Meals on Wheels and worked for Morford & Benson during tax season. She was a member of Alva Church of God, serving as treasurer and organist, and a member of United Neighbors F.C.E.
Surviving are one daughter, Kathy, of the home; three sons, Paul of Troy, Mo., Dave of Claremore, and Dale of Haskell; two granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James, who died April 5, 1981.
