Stephen Mayo Scott, age 53, of Mangum died Saturday, January 19, 2013, in rural Greer County, northwest of Mangum, Oklahoma. His death was a result of an airplane crash. He was doing one of the many things he loved, flying the Beach Craft Barron.
Stephen graduated from Mangum High School in 1977, and served as president of the Mangum High School Alumni Association in 1992. Stephen worked for Jewett Scott Truckline and Mangum Brick Company for over 25 years. Stephen attended the Mangum First United Methodist Church and was a member of the United Methodist Men. In 2002 Governor Keating appointed Stephen as the Greer County Representative of the Quartz Mountain Arts and Conference Center and Nature Park Board of Trustees. He also worked several years with the Rattlesnake Association and Lions Club. He passionately worked with the Water Resource Board on ways to bring more water to Greer County. He was very concerned about the necessity of conserving water of southwestern Oklahoma.
He was an instrument rated, commercial certified licensed pilot that flew for many years with friends and family. He enjoyed all the people in the office, plant, and maintenance building. There wasn't anything he wouldn't try to fix, or anyone he wouldn't try to help. He helped so many people in his work place and on his own time. He was a Christian man that truly followed the example of Jesus and lived a life of service.
He was full of life, and was always looking forward to the future. He was especially excited about a �guys� skiing trip to Breckenridge, Colorado, in late February. He also had been working in his shop getting his boat ready for this spring and summer season of boating and fishing with his many friends.
He married, Mary Jane (McDaniel) Scott, on October 19, 2001. They were a perfect match and loved each other with their whole hearts, perfect companions and friends.
Stephen is survived by his wife, Mary Jane, of the home; his father, Jewett Scott, Jr. of Mangum, one brother Jewett David Scott and wife Sharon of Mangum; one sister, Holly Johnson and husband Joe of Little Rock, Arkansas; two step sons: Braden Looper and wife Shannon of Frankfort, Illinois; John Burgess and wife Ashlee of Elk City� Oklahoma; 3 step grandchildren: Toryn, Landen, and Gracyn Looper; nieces are Amy Johnson Castor and husband Val; Lyndsey Johnson; Tana Scott Flores and husband Avery; Tessa Scott and many great nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Mangum United Methodist Church, the Mangum Alumni Association, or the Mangum Education Foundation.
Family visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 22, at the Greer Funeral Home in Mangum, Oklahoma. Services will be at the Mangum First United Methodist Church, Wednesday, January 23, at 2:00.
