Melvin Sandersfeld, 74, of Norman, OK, died after a lengthy illness on December 14, 2015. He was born November 8, 1941 to Willie (Bill) and Nadine Sandersfeld, in Hobart, Oklahoma, where he lived and attended school until High School graduation.
Mel was a gifted athlete, yet a mild mannered, humble guy everyone loved and admired. He attended Hobart High School where he excelled in all sports, and especially football for which he set numerous records that remained unbroken for many years to come. A poster of Mel was placed in the gymnasium there, and remained for many years.
His scholarship in football at The University of Oklahoma led to a successful four years as a defensive back and running back under the guidance of coach Bud Wilkinson. During Mel's senior year at OU he played in the 1963 Orange Bowl against Alabama, in which he intercepted a Joe Namath pass.
After college, Mel was employed by Western Electric as an accounting supervisor for many years. Upon retirement, Mel enjoyed transporting automobiles for local car dealerships in Norman, and made many lasting friendships. In recent years, he and his friends gathered at local coffee shops each morning to visit and drink coffee.
He was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather to his family who love him dearly.
He is survived by his mother Nadine Sandersfeld and sister Kay Etsell, of Yucaipa, Calif, his wife Sherryl, of the home, sons Jay and wife Bonnie, of Pangborn, AR, Jeff and wife Tina, of Boise, ID, Mike And wife Gennifer, of Moore, OK, granddaughter Kayla, grandsons Kurtis, Corbin, Austin, Charlie, and Mickey, and Great-Grandson Knox.
He was preceded in death by his father Bill and brother Roy Orr.
