Thomas "Tommy" Leon Royer, 59 of Sedalia, Missouri died Friday, August 1, 2014 at University Hospital in Columbia, Missouri. The family will greet friends at 1:00 p.m. prior to the memorial service.
The memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at Haywood Baptist Church with Reverend Ed Garrett officiating. The Robert B. Thomas, Veterans of Foreign Wars post #1098 will provide military honors.
He was born August 9, 1954 in McAlester, Oklahoma to Burl B. and Wynema Joplin Royer. Tommy grew up in Haywood and attended school there until the high school closed in 1968. He graduated from Savanna High School in 1972 and married Gayle Roach of Savanna that same year.
In 1973 he joined the U.S. Air Force. The Air Force motto "Air High" certainly described Tommy during his 20 years of dedicated service. Tommy retired in 1993. His retirement plaque reads: "To Tommy Royer - the man we can never replace."
He was greatly appreciated by his commanding officers for his professionalism. All of his family members can attest to the words on the plaque. Tommy's love and honor never failed for his family. His greatest treasure was his children and grandchildren. They knew that Papa Tommy would usually grant all of their wishes.
During his retirement years he worked as a T-38 mechanic at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri.
He married Judy Collins in 2002.
Tommy liked most sports, especially Dirt Track Racing and NASCAR. He sponsored his son-in-law, Kevin Kaiser for several years in the United Late Model Association for racing in Missouri.
Tommy is survived by his wife, Judy Collins Royer of Sedalia, MO, mother, Wynema Pruitt of McAlester, OK, three children, Amanda Burton and husband Joey of Michigan City, MS, T.J. Royer of Bell Buckle, TN, step-daughter, Angela Kaiser of Sedalia, MO, four grandchildren, Will and Thomas Gray Bruton, Jarrett Royer and Shain Kaiser, three sisters, Sharon Smith and husband Bill of Wilburton, OK, Karen Powell of Hartshorne, OK and Beryldean Wagoner of Hartshorne, OK.
He was preceded in death by his father, Burl Royer, a step-son, Jerry Collins and nephew, Keith South.
Honorary pallbearers will be T.J. Royer, Joey Burton, Bill Smith and Buck Ward.
