Richard Dean Roots

May 13, 1930 ~ Feb. 3, 2010

ENID - The funeral for Richard Dean Roots, 79, will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at United Methodist Church, Hardtner, Kan. Pastor Elizabeth Kirkwood will officiate. Burial will be in Hardtner Cemetery. Arrangements are by Marshall Funeral Home, Alva.

He was born May 13, 1930, in Wilmore, Kan., to Ralph Wesley and Mildred Esther Nicholson Roots and died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, in Enid.

He was a graduate of Hardtner High School. He served in the Army, where he was a construction engineer.

He married Beverly Jo Daughhetee May 28, 1953, in Medicine Lodge, Kan.

They made their home in Holcomb, Kan., for 25 years, where he served on the city council and recreation commission. They moved to Cherokee in 1985. He worked as a carpenter all his life.

He was a member of American Legion Post 0175 in Hardtner, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Garden City and Fraternal Order of Eagles in Garden City since 1967.

Surviving are his wife, Beverly, of Cherokee; one daughter, Yolanda Roots; and one brother, Russell Roots of Alva.

He was preceded in death by an infant son and one brother.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Hardtner American Legion.
