Doris passed away peacefully on Easter morning, April 16, 2017. She was 98 years old. Doris was born to David and Ethel Simpson in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on August 18, 1918. She graduated from high school in Randolph, Nebraska in 1936. She attended Nebraska State Teachers College in Kearney, Nebraska. Following graduation, she taught school in rural Nebraska for two years.
With the advent of war looming, she decided to move to Los Angeles, California. She was employed at the Federal Reserve Bank and volunteered as a hostess at the USO in Hollywood during the war.
She returned to Nebraska after the war and lived in Wakefield until 1969 when she moved to Ponca City. During her years here, she served on the Marland Mansion Commission, Cultural Affairs Commission, and the Park and Recreation Commission. She also served on the Postal Advisory board and the committee that chose murals to decorate the interior of the Post Office.
Doris was a long time member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Eastern Star, Business and Professional Women, and the Presbyterian Church.
At the age of 62, Doris began working at the Ponca City News. She worked for the newspaper for 26 years, retiring when she was 88 years old. She enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, traveling, and visiting with family and friends. She owned several Mustang convertibles and people knew her around town as "the lady that drove the red Mustang".
She is survived by her boys, Dave and Richard, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
At her request there will be no services. Her family requests that any memorials be made to Hospice of North Central Oklahoma, 445 Fairview Ave., Ponca City, OK 74601.
