Victor Ray Riggs, 76, joined his Lord and Savior in eternal rest Tuesday, June 23, 2020.
Victor was born November 9, 1943, to Inez & Raymond Riggs in Howard County Texas. Raymond was serving in Europe during WWII when he received a telegram notifying him his first son had been born.
Victor lived most of his life in Oklahoma, graduating from Moore High School and then working for the US Postal Service. He first worked as a clerk, then as a mail carrier for many years. He made many friends along his route, as he delivered mail. They got to know him and appreciated his friendliness and engaging personality, often giving him gifts on holidays. He retired after 30 years of service. In his retirement, he starting driving school buses. He was a beloved bus driver for Newcastle and then Deer Creek schools where he developed many friendships over the years.
He had a sharp wit and incredible sense of humor. He was likable, funny, and engaging and he got along with everyone. He was an avid OU fan and loved debating football as well as politics with others. Vic was known for his handiness around the house, including installing tile which he was regularly asked to do by several family members through the years.
Victor was an active contributor to the local community. He attended Newcastle First Baptist for many years. He served on the pulpit committee and was active in hiring pastor Bill Gentry who preached at the Newcastle First Baptist Church for over 20 years. He was very active in elevating girls’ softball in Newcastle. He coached his daughter Natalie’s USSSA softball team, the Newcastle Angels, for 6 years. Their team was very accomplished and played in tournaments all over the country including Indiana and Florida. He was one of many parents who signed a loan to purchase the land for the Newcastle Softball Complex. He helped build the complex and his name is on a plaque at the facility to this day.
Vic enjoyed life and he had several hobbies throughout his life. He was an enthusiastic cook and loved cooking his own recipes of spaghetti and meatballs, smoked meatloaf, and homemade fried potatoes for his family. When he was younger he enjoyed water skiing and owned a ski boat. Another hobby he had as a young man was motocross which he raced in the early 1970s. He was an enthusiastic reader, he enjoyed leatherworking and was an accomplished hunter and fisherman. He often traveled to Mexico with his friends and fished out of a remote village near lake Guerrero in Mexico. He loved quail hunting and had a wonderful English Springer Spaniel bird dog he trained to hunt.
He loved technology. He was an early adopter and owned one of the first handheld calculators and handheld video games. It was a little handheld football game that had a row of 5 LEDs you would maneuver down the field. He loved talking on the CB radio and had one of the tallest radio towers in the neighborhood with a rotating antenna on top, which was somewhat embarrassing to his kids. He would talk to people all over the country and exchange postcards with them. He later replaced CB radios with computers.
He married Michelle McGee on December 29th, 2012. He was as generous and loving with his step kids as he was with his own. For the last several years they attended Crossings Community Church in Oklahoma City.
He is preceded in death by his parents and two daughters; Jaymie Riggs and Natalie Riggs. He is survived by sons; Christin Riggs, wife Kimberly, and their seven children; Gary Riggs, wife Nancy, and their four children; Jerry Riggs and daughter; granddaughter Victoria Riggs and daughter; brother Ron Riggs and family; wife Michelle McGee, and stepchildren Tobin, Sonnet, and Brogan Lamb.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m, Saturday, June 27, 2020 at Matthews Funeral Home Chapel.
We will be live streaming this service in an effort to accommodate those people that wish to attend but feel they should not due to the health environment.
