Nelda "Kaye" Richey, 72, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, May 4, 2017 at Comanche County Memorial Hospital. Her husband, daughter and sister-in-law were at her bedside.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held 2 P.M., Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at Lawton First Assembly of God in the Garden Room with Pastor Debbie Pratt officiating. Cremation and the memorial service will be under the direction of Whinery-Huddleston Funeral Home.
Kaye was born August 10, 1944 in Lamesa, Texas to the late Tracy E. and Dorothy M. Wells Monthey. She moved to Arlington, Texas at age 7 and graduated from Arlington High School in 1962 and completed her Bachelor's Degree in Social Work at Texas Women's University in 1966.
Kaye met her future husband, W.D. (Bill) Richey in 1963 while in college and they were married December 23, 1966 in Arlington, Texas. As an Army wife, she and her husband lived in Ft. Lewis, WA., Norfolk, VA., Wurzburg and Darmstadt, Germany and Lawton, OK where they settled in 1986. She also traveled to Belgium, France, England, as well as throughout the United States. She was involved with various Army wives' organizations wherever she lived and was affiliated at Fort Sill with Senior Saints of PWOC.
Her loves included her husband of over 50 years, her family, cooking, sewing and gardening. Her career as a social worker began in 1967 in Texas and continued until 2008. She worked both in the U.S. and during her time spent abroad. As a case worker, she worked in AFDC, with child development and with adoption services. Her greatest joys came from seeing young people thrive and from knowing she had been instrumental in putting families together through adoption.
Her many creative talents included flower arranging, decorating, sewing, cake decorating and so much more. She made pillow case dresses for children in an African orphanage, blankets for newborns at the local hospitals, and was well-known for the food she prepared for those who were ill.
She was also a devout Christian and served Jesus Christ as a member of Lawton First Assembly Church since 1995. She was involved in "Forerunners" Bible study at her church and served with the bereavement committee.
Survivors include her husband, Bill Richey of the home, a daughter, Tamara Kaye Leland, a granddaughter, Brittany Kaye Richey, a grandson, Bailey Dean Leland, and a great-grand daughter, Alexandria Kaye Brand, three nephews Brian and Keith Monthey and Jon Van Schaik, a niece Cara Horn, other relatives and a host of friends.
Kaye was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Doyle Monthey.
