Fredalene (Madding) Rice

May 7, 1922 ~ September 24, 2007

Fredalene Rice, affectionately known as Freddie by friends and family, was born in Rattan, Oklahoma on May 7, 1922 to Fred and Nellie Madding. She went to Bethel and Cade Grade Schools and Bennington Schools where she graduated in 1940.

Called to the field of teaching, she would attend Murray State College in Tushamingo, Oklahoma receiving an Associates Degree in 1942 and go on to Central State University in Edmond, Oklahoma, the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma, and graduate with her Bachelors Degree from Southwestern State University in Durant, Oklahoma.

After she finished school she worked five years for CIT. She went on to teach 27 years in Cade, Oklahoma, Lemon Hill, Oklahoma, and would end her teaching career at Soldier Creek Elementary School in Midwest City, Oklahoma.

Freddie first met Bill in July of 1944, during World War II. They met at the KC Restaurant in Durant, Oklahoma when he dropped a nickel by the nickelodeon that she was sitting next to and asked her what song she would like him to play. Bill propose to her in August of 1944 at the Bryan Hotel in Durant, but the war would keep them apart until March of 1946. They would get married on a Friday, March 13, 1946 in Oklahoma City. Although they both wanted children, it would take them several years before their son, Philip Mark, was born on August 15, 1954 in Oklahoma City.

Bill would work as a contractor/builder while Freddie taught school. Bill would go on to work at Tinker Air Force Base and retire from there while Freddie retired from teaching from Soldier Creek Elementary. Not wanting to just sit around, they would move from their home on Robin Road and purchase a duplex in Midwest City that they remodeled and sold. Next, they moved into a town home that they also remodeled and sold. Bill would then decide to build a home for them on Pinehurst Drive. Unfortunately, it just wasn't quite big enough for either one of them, so they purchased the lot next to it and built another home where they have lived for over 10 years.

Three years ago after several surgeries, Freddie became ill and never fully recovered. Freddie had many hobbies including painting, ceramics, decorating, sewing, crafts, reading, dancing, square dancing and traveling. You can see the efforts of her hobbies all over her home in beautiful paintings, knick-knacks, draperies and trimmings. She loved to decorate her home for each of the seasons. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority, the Zeta Chapter of Midwest City, the Association of Retired Teachers, the Oklahoma Education Association, the Moose Lodge and a lifetime member of the American Association of University Women. She was also an active member of Faith Community Christian Church. Freddie has lived a long and productive life.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Nellie Madding and her brother Billy.

She is survived today by her loving husband Bill, her brother Bud Madding of Oklahoma City, her sisters Pauline Everett of Oklahoma City and Babe Pearce of Noble, Oklahoma, her son Mark and granddaughter Danielle of Overland Park, Kansas and many other family members and friends.
