Vergie (Roots) Reed

February 16, 1924 ~ 2016

KIOWA, Kansas - Funeral service for Vergie Reed will be Tuesday, May 24, 2016, at 10 a.m. at Kiowa First Christian Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery at Medicine Lodge. Arrangements are by Lanman Funeral Home Inc. of Kiowa, Kansas. Online condolences may be made at www.lanmanmemorials.com.

Vergie was born near Alva , Oklahoma, on February 16, 1924, the daughter of George Roots and Emma Hopkins Roots. She attended South Hackberry Country School and Laswell Country Church. She and Dewey Reed were married in Alva , Oklahoma, on November 9, 1940, and had celebrated 75 years of marriage last November. Vergie was a true rancher's wife. She and Dewey lived at the Z-Ranch and she cooked for 25 to 30 men for many years. She also tended the milk cows, chickens, guineas. She was Steve's backup mechanic and kept Duke's car clean. She loved doing things for and with family. Vergie and Dewey had traveled to Nashville to the Grand Old Opry and to California to see other family. They loved to go dancing, first to Capron and later to the VFW in Alva . They had pet names for each other and used them to the end - she was Punk and he was Honk.

Vergie was given the utmost loving care at the Attica Manor from the day she entered to her last days. She was loved.

Those who preceded Vergie in death are her parents; one son, Duke Reed; sisters, Vera, Viva, Theo, Rose and Nora and one brother, Orin.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband Dewey of Kiowa, Kansas, three children, Patrician Ann Atkinson and husband, Eddie of Rogersville, Missouri, Steven Leon Reed and wife, Susie of Kiowa, Kansas, Buddy Liggenstoffer and wife, Carolyn of Kiowa; Kansas, nine grandchildren, Duke Schupbach and wife, Kelly, Jodie Parsons, Kent Reed, Travis Reed, Trishell Lopez, Stephanie McCammon and husband, Jim, Dusty J. Reed and wife, Amanda, Audra Liggenstoffer and Buddy Liggenstoffer and wife, Pattie; five great grandchildren, Bailey Zulkoski, Marshall McCammon, Emma Schupbach, John Schupbach and Buddy Liggenstoffer; one sister, Catherine Naomi Ford and husband, Wayne of Enid.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Attica Long Term Care through Lanman Funeral Home Inc. of Kiowa.
