Jerry Dan Reed, Sr., 75, of Canton, Oklahoma departed this life on Monday, June 22, 2020 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was born October 19, 1944 at Lawton, Oklahoma to Raymond and Alma (Boardman) Reed.
Jerry grew up in Oklahoma City and attended Putnam City Schools. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1961 and was honorably discharged in November of 1965. Jerry worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone and retired after 32 years of service. He married Debbie London on July 18, 2002 at Canton, Oklahoma.
Jerry was a fixture at Canton Lake, where you could find him enjoying his favorite past-time, fishing. He loved being at the lake, and was widely known as an accomplished angler. Simply put, Jerry caught fish. Lots of fish, most of which he threw back or gave away. He was even known to share sage advice for novices or weekenders. People learned to look for the white Chevrolet pickup with the camper shell sporting the “Fish Nut” tag on the front, as Jerry could be found close by. The last few years had been tough for Jerry as his age and bad knees had made it impossible to scale the rock rip-rap that he had fished for so many years. He will be missed by his family, lake friends and fellow fisherman.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Lynn Warlick of Muskogee, OK; Survivors include his wife Debbie of the home at Canton, OK; a daughter, Kimberly Dowd; sons Jerry Dan Reed and wife Christy of Owasso, OK, Kenneth Reed of St. Louis, MO, Aaron Arias Vales and wife Lacey of Watonga, OK and Josh Arias and wife Tabitha of Oklahoma City, OK; brothers Gil Reed and wife Linda of Tyler, TX, Terry Michael Reed and wife Pat of Tuttle, OK and David Reed and wife Linda of Oklahoma City, OK; a brother-in-law, Don Warlick of Muskogee, OK; grandchildren Austin Reed, Daniel Reed, Ryan Reed, Tanner Reed and Krizalynn Reed; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends.
Per Jerry’s wishes, his earthly remains were cremated. A private family memorial service will be held in Oklahoma City in July due to the Corona Virus pandemic. An informal gathering will be held in the near future at Canton Lake for Jerry’s fishing buddies and lake friends, with the day, time and location posted on Facebook, the funeral home website and shared via word of mouth. Memorial contributions in Jerry’s memory may be made to the Canton Lake Walleye Rodeo Association to fund the kid’s lifetime fishing license program through the Community State Bank of Canton in care of Jean Howard.
