Story of a Champion
It is with a heavy heart we say farewell to a cowboy, friend, loving husband, father, and proud grandpa on Friday, October 21, 2022.
Tommy Lew Record, Jr., known as Buster or "Bus", was born on April 27, 1956, in Guymon, OK, to Tommy Lew, Sr., and Patricia Emerson Record. He was raised on a ranch outside of Dumas, TX where all he knew was rodeo, which would take him on a life-long journey that most cowboys only dream about. Buster graduated from Dumas High School in 1974 where he participated in the Tri-State rodeos. After graduating he attended college at Cisco Junior College in Cisco, TX before transferring to Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, OK. In 1978 Buster married Jane Franks of Buffalo, OK, and to this union they welcomed TeeKay in 1983, TyLee in 1989, and at the age of 20, son, Jay Sellers joined the family.
After marriage Buster and Jane took off rodeoing at the amateur rodeos. Buster joined the PRCA roping calves for many years and later participated in "tripping" where he won the coveted World Championship in 2002. Cheyenne would be his last event upon retiring from steer roping. Afterwards, he focused on team roping where he would make new friends and countless more memories.
Over the many decades of rodeo his friends grew into family and countless cowboys would drift in and out of the ranch house front door. Buster cherished all of life's moments, every story, every cookout, every rodeo mile, and every person he met. Buster was a Cowboy's Cowboy, World Champ, and best "Bus".
Buster is preceded in death by: "Daddy" Tommy Lew, Sr.; "Mother" Patricia Emerson Record; Father-in-law Lynn Franks; Mother-in-law Kathryn Franks; close family friend Blake Lauer; his steer roping horse (Ok, Jane's horse) Ole' Paint.
Buster is survived by: wife Jane, daughter TeeKay Record Parker and husband Robert, grandkids Dylan, Emiley, Chloe, and Finley, and expecting great grandbaby Axel Morris; daughter TyLee Record Heredia and husband Christian, granddaughters Josie and Daylen; son Jay Sellers and wife Christy, grandchildren Charly, Chaney, and Stony; sister Cathy Record Boone; and sister Billie Record Jameson and husband Rupert. He is survived by nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, and countless friends and rodeo family.
In John 16:22, Jesus told his disciples, "Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy." This is our promise in Christ. We will hurt. We will grieve. We will continue. We will be reunited. We will rejoice. We will have joy again.
Until then - ride on, cowboy, ride... your entry fees have been paid.
