Dr. Rasmussen died peacefully in his sleep after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Maurie, as he was known, was born in Coon Rapids, IA in 1935.. Soon after, his family relocated to Oregon, and he graduated from Bend High School in 1953. He then attended Oregon State University where he graduated in 1957 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, and in 1959 with an M.S. in Aeronautical Engineering. Following OSU he attended the doctorate program at Stanford University and graduated with a Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics in 1964.
While attending Stanford, Maurie met his future wife Barbara, and they were married in 1961. They had one son, Eric, while in California, and in 1967 the family moved to Norman, OK where Maurie became a professor of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Oklahoma. In 1970, they had a second son, Matt, and the family made Norman their home for the biggest part of Maurie’s teaching career.
Maurie authored many professional journal papers and articles, and was well known for his research in Waverider design. He received many honors while teaching at the University including The David Ross Boyd Distinguished Professor in 1988, as well as becoming the first professor to receive the distinguished L.A. Comp Chair in 1994.
Maurie enjoyed many hobbies including fishing, boating, and tennis. As a self taught tennis player, Maurie was ranked in both singles and doubles in the USTA Missouri Valley for many years.
Though increasingly limited in recent years by the progression of his disease, his greatest joy was being with family and friends. He is survived by his wife Barbara, brother Ron, sons Eric and Matt, daughter-in-law Maureen, and grandchildren Heather, Mason, Colleen, and Lauren.
Services will be held on Thursday, November 21, at 2:00 pm at the First Christian Church in Norman.
