Mae Belle (Raum) Rambo

August 29, 1903 ~ July 1, 1999

A memorial service for Mae Belle Rambo of Norman was held July 6 at 11:00 a.m. in the Memorial Presbyterian Church, Norman.

Mrs. Rambo was born August 29, 1903, at Greenville, Texas and died July 1, 1999, at the age of 95. She was the daughter of George Washington Raum and Mary Ann Rankin Raum, the fourth of six children.

In childhood she lived in Greenville, McKinney, Quanah and Fort Worth, Texas and in Ardmore, graduating from Marietta High School in 1920. Mrs. Rambo briefly attended Central Normal at Edmond and Southeastern Normal at Durant and immediately began teaching in the rural one-room schools in Love County, teaching at Lou King and Bomar until her marriage in 1925 to Joseph Daniel Rambo.

In 1942, she was elected County Superintendent of Schools for Love County and served until the family moved to Norman in 1945.

A dedicated Christian and lifetime member of the Presbyterian Church, she taught Sunday School for fifty years.

As a volunteer reader for the Library for the Blind, a function of the State Department of Human Services, Mrs. Rambo read onto tape thousands of hours of books and periodicals, making their contents available to blind Oklahomans. She was an avid gardener, but her first love was spending time with her family.

Mrs. Rambo was a founding member of the Memorial Presbyterian Church, a member of the Norman Senior Citizens’ Center, the American Bible Society, a strong supporter of the Summer Linguistics Institute on the OU campus, and having raised a family during the Great Depression, was a lifetime dedicated member of the Democratic Party.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, G. Dan and Fenilda Rambo and J. David Rambo and Laura W. Boyd of Norman; a daughter and son-in-law, Betty Lou Rambo Mahone and Charles Mahone of Lubbock, Texas; 13 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Rambo was preceded in death by her husband in 1964.

Services were directed by the John M. Ireland Funeral Home and Chapel, Moore.

Memorial donations may be made to the Memorial Presbyterian Church.
