Harold Loyd Powers departed this life on Sunday, May 13, 2018 in Lawton, OK. After living on this Earth for 92 years, 6 months and 16 days he moved to his heavenly home.
Harold's service will be Friday, May 18, 2018 at 2:00pm at First Pentecostal Holiness Church at Apache. Rev Caleb McDowell and Rev Larry Thoma will be officiating.
Harold Loyd Powers was born October 27, 1925 to Sim and Jane Thacker Powers, native Kentuckians of rural Carnegie who moved to Carnegie in 1920. Jane liked watching the silent film actor Harold Lloyd who was popular at this time so much she named her new born son after him.
Harold's family lived on a farm northeast of Carnegie. On the farm he learned to work hard at an early age. He walked 3 miles round trip with his siblings every day to attend Prairie Lone School. By 7th grade he had to quit school to work full time on the farm. Around the age of 14 he taught himself to play the guitar and the harmonica. He enjoyed playing at church, family reunions, with friends and just for his enjoyment of it, all his life. He never served in the military; he had a farm deferment so he stayed on the farm and worked. While attending a revival service in Mountain View he met the love of his life, Lucy Jones. They were married August 29, 1948.
In early 1950 Harold and Lucy and their new son moved west of Apache where Harold had leased 80 acres of land to farm. Apache was to be their hometown for the rest of their lives. In 1956 Harold bought his first farm of 80 acres east of Apache where they moved to. Harold and Lucy were blessed with 4 wonderful children.
They have now left behind their son, 3 daughters, and spouses: Loyd and Mary Powers, Jane and Eddie Kendall, Rosie and Kent Love, all of Apache and Mae and Lonnie Morgan of Chickasha; 9 grandchildren and spouses: Jana and Seth Grabeal, Apache; Katy Powers, OKC; Gala and Tommy Searcy, Apache; Ben Kendall, Kearney, MO; Robert and Dawn Kendall, Kansas City, MO; Micah and Lezlie Love, Rush Springs; Lindsey Love, OKC; Paul Morgan, Chickasha; and Lydia Morgan, Chickasha; 11 great-grandchildren: Camryn, Chloe, Carly and Collin Grabeal of Apache; Boone Searcy of Apache; Abby, Morgan and Paige Kendall of Kansas City, MO; Emma, Kate and Lana Love of Rush Springs; two sisters-in-law, Billye Powers and Nina Powers.
Harold loved the grandkids and great-grandkids; he never tired of being a grandpa. Family was important to him. He enjoyed farming and raising cattle, playing his guitar and harmonica, hunting, fishing and in younger years woodworking. He loved to tease. On Sunday, he, Lucy and the kids all went to church. They never missed unless there was an emergency or once a year for attending a family reunion. Church was an important part of their lives.
Harold's beloved wife of 67 years preceded him in death. Also, his parents, Sim and Jane Powers, his in-laws, Louie and Lovis Jones, a half-brother, Sam, 3 half-sisters, Bertha Gunter, Edna Gunter and Flora Murray, sisters, Dicie Sanders, Mallie Powers (infant buried in Kentucky) and Mary Horn, brothers, Ernest Powers (infant buried in Kentucky), Caleb, Fred and James, grandson, Kenneth Powers and great-grandson, Jared Love.
