Who can find a Virtuous Woman For her Value is far greater than rubies and gold. Bessie Hughes Poulton, 82, passed away January 18, 2006 in Bakersfield, CA. She was born June 29, 1923 in Henrietta, Oklahoma to Harry and Hattie Hughes. Bessie came to California with her parents in 1925, living in McFarland for most of her life. Her early years were spent with her family involved in farm life.
She met and married a school friend and neighbor boy, Herman Charles Poulton, in 1937. They had two sons, Carl and Clifford. They also had a daughter, Phyllis, who died in infancy. Herman hauled hay for many years with Bessie upholding her end of the partnership by bringing to the field a home-cooked noontime meal and iced-tea every day. She and Herman shared a passion for fishing, especially the streams in the Sierras. In later years they haunted antique auctions, shops, and junk yards looking for what they called treasures. They shared 52 wonderful years together before his death in 1990.
Bessie's greatest loves wer her family and home,She possessed a wonderfully dry sense of humor which emerged when least expected. She planted and tended beautiful flowers and bountiful vegetable gardens. She was a talented crafts-person and great cook. She loved having her family around her, especailly her granddaughter Mindy with whom she shared a special relationship. She will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends.
Survivors include sons: Carl and wife, Carolyn, of Bkfd., and Clifford and wife, Eva, of CO. Grandchildren Lennie Poulton and wife, Sheri and their kids, Lanie, Torie and Skylar of Bkfd., Mindy Poulton-Adam and husband, Bill Adam and son Nick, of Bkfd., Christina Grosboil and husband, Mick and their kids, Caitlyn and Alyssa, of CO., and Suzanne Poulton of Mass. A great grandson, Shane Lamar, and two great great grandchildren, Jayden Poulton and Cody Lamar. Two siblings, Esther Hughes Schmitt, of OR., and Jack Hughes and wife, Shirley, of McFarland. Also numerous nieces and nephews. All adored Aunt Bessie
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman, infant daughter Phyllis Eileen, granddaughter Robin Poulton, two sisters, Ruby Estelle Hudson and Vivian Alice Hudson, her parents, Harry and Hattie Hughes, and a nephew, Philip Shattuck.
Vistation is scheduled for January 23, 2006 from 4:00 p.m. to 7: p.m. at Delano Mortuary, 707 Browning Rd., Delano, CA
Services will be held Tuesday, January 24, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at the Delano Cemetery, ' 627 Austin, Delano, CA
