Essie Potter, age 89 of Blanchard, passed away peacefully Sunday, April 23, 2023. Essie Corine Harless was born July 28, 1933 in Boswell, Oklahoma, the oldest of 6 children born to James Cullis Harless and Maggie Myrtle (Pierce) Harless. She was raised in Boswell and attended school there, graduating with the Class of 1950.
By chance, she met a young man from Lexington named Carroll Chester Potter. They were both at a soda shop in Lexington, and the rest, as they say, is history. Their first home as a married couple was in Ajo, Arizona, before returning to Oklahoma City in 1958. Together they raised four children, daughters Maggye and Brenda and sons, Marlin and Lonnie. Essie worked in sales at Sears for a number of years, retiring in 1983. Away from work, she loved tending to her garden and redecorating her home to match the seasons. She enjoyed traveling, especially anywhere near the beach or in the mountains. She cherished her fur babies and was never happier than the day she became a nanny/grandma. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and a true friend. She never uttered a disparaging word and loved with all her heart. There are some who bring a light so great to the world that even after they have gone, the light remains. Jesus Christ was her personal Lord and Savior, light of the light. She will be sorely missed!
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll C. Potter; her grandson, Jeffrey Monroe and siblings Susie Klusmeyer and James Harless.
Essie is survived by: her daughters, Maggye Potter Arnold and husband Tom of Blanchard and Brenda Monroe and husband Michael of Norman; sons, Marlin Potter and wife Sherry of Norman and Lonnie Potter and wife Brenda of Blanchard; sisters, Mary White Rogers and husband Fred of Lake Havasu, AZ and Betty Lester and husband Ron of Tucson, AZ; brother David Harless of Norman; 6 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren and a host of other family and friends.
The family will plan a Celebration of Essie’s Life in the near future. www.wilsonlittle.com.
