Mary Ellen (Werthe) Pope, of Big Spring, TX has gone to be with the Lord. At the age of 88, she made her peaceful journey on July 5, 2014. She was born in Tulsa, OK on February 28, 1926, and moved to Big Spring from Mauldin, SC where she resided for nearly 40 years. She was a long-standing member of the Mauldin United Methodist Church.
Mary Ellen was a child of the depression and was raised faithfully in the church. In Tulsa, OK she fell in love with her husband, Sam, who was in the Navy in WWII. She knew Sam was the one, during a youth presentation at her church, when he shared a moving story of his faith that touched her heart.
Mary Ellen had a zest for life which she shared with everyone she met. Her life was filled with the love of music, arts and crafts, books, learning and service to the Lord. She leaves behind a legacy of valuing the importance of family.
Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, Sam L. Pope who passed away in December 1997, and her son-in-law, Todd Fulmer who passed away in August 2012.
Survivors include her brother, Don Werthe and wife Dee (Allison) of Littleton, NC; three sons, Jerry Pope and wife Rebecca Williams of Swannanoa, NC; George Pope of Akron, OH; Ken Pope and wife Ann (Crittenden) of Big Spring, TX; daughter, Nancy Pope and husband John Watkins of Columbia, SC; three grandchildren, Cassandra Ketrick of New York, NY; Madeleine Pope of Portland, OR; and Eric Pope of Lubbock, TX.
The family is deeply grateful to the following: Marcy Place, Compass Hospice, IntegraCare, Comfort Keepers, Encompass, Park Place, and TLC Services.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Mauldin United Methodist Church, 100 East Butler Road, Mauldin, SC 29662, or Compass Hospice, 602 South Main Street, Big Spring TX 79720, or your favorite charity .
A memorial service and interment will be held July 24, 2014 at 3:00 PM at Mauldin United Methodist Church.
