Henry Bartlett Poore of Norman made his last cast on April 13th, 2013. He was born in Hinton, Oklahoma on November 30, 1926 to Arthur L. Poore and Opal G. (Gentry) Poore. He was always proud of the fact that he shared his birthday with Winston Churchill. He attended public schools in Lookeba, Oklahoma and graduated from Sayre High School in Sayre, Oklahoma in 1944. Later that same year, Henry enlisted in the United States Navy, serving in the Pacific theater in World War II as a gunner's mate 3rd class on PT 505, being honorably discharged in 1946. Henry was the recipient of three military medals – the Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal, and the Asiatic – Pacific Campaign Medal. He attended Oklahoma State University for two years.
In the summer of 1946, after leaving the Navy and while staying with his parents in Erick, a young scrawny girl riding a bicycle caught his eye. He later met the scrawny girl, Miss LaRae Jane Johnson, then a junior in high school, through mutual friends. The two of them married on June 7th, 1949 in Erick, Oklahoma. They made their first home in Grand Prairie, Texas and later moved to Hydro, Oklahoma then to Altus, Oklahoma to Sulphur, Oklahoma and finally to Norman, Oklahoma in 1959.
Henry worked in the lumber business, first with Carey Lumber in Sulphur and later in Norman, then with K & K Lumber. Later he started his own business, Norman Roofing Supply which he operated until 1987.
Henry was a member of McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church and the Fellowship Sunday School class since 1959. He was one of the earliest members of the weekly Men's Prayer Breakfast, which recently celebrated its 50th year. His yearly fish fry breakfasts were one of that group's favorite events.
Henry loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, was an avid fisherman, and was never happier than when he had a fishing rod in his hand and a fish on the line. He taught his children, grandchildren and many others to fish and to enjoy nature. One of his favorite pastimes was to relax on the front porch of his small retreat at Lake Texoma with friends and family.
Henry and Jane were blessed with four children: Larry Steven Poore, Robert Bartlett Poore, Jack Robin Poore and Nancy Jane Poore Smith; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great, great-grandchild.
Henry's parents and oldest son Steven preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jane; two sons, Robert Poore of the home and Jack Poore of Kingston, Oklahoma; one daughter, Nancy Smith and husband David of Norman, Oklahoma; one daughter-in-law, Nancy Lynne Poore of Norman, Oklahoma; one sister, Doris Trousdale of Sachse, Texas; one brother-in-law, Lee Johnson and his wife Patsy of Weatherford, Oklahoma; one sister-in-law Helen Vines and her husband Chris of Perryton, Texas; his 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild, all of whom adored their Paw Paw, and numerous nieces and nephews; and his pet black Scottie dog, Heidi-Ho of the home.
Memorial Services will begin at 2:00 p.m., Friday, April 19th at the McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church, 419 South University Boulevard in Norman with Reverend Cal Brannon officiating. Memorial donations may be made in Henry's honor to the Department of Veterans Affairs, Medical Center, 921 Northeast 13th Street, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73074 or Norman Food and Shelter for Friends, 104 West Comanche, Norman, Oklahoma 73069.
In his own words, Henry wished to express his appreciation for his life by saying, "I Love my family, I Love my Lord, and I Love my Country."
Arrangements for Henry and his family were placed in the care of the Vice family at the Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman, Oklahoma.
